5 moSome men believe women dress primarily for male attention due to a combination of deep-seated cultural socialization, psychological biases, and historical gender roles. This perception often stems from viewing the world through a "male gaze," which frames women's choices relative to their desirability to men.
1. Cultural Socialization and the "Male Gaze"
Media Influence: For decades, mainstream media (film, advertising, and fashion) has portrayed women through a heterosexual male lens, often depicting them as passive objects designed for visual pleasure.
Internalized Patriarchal Norms: Many men are socialized to see themselves as "main characters" whose attention is a primary goal for others. This can lead to a subconscious belief that women's actions, including fashion choices, are centered around men's reactions.
Objectification: Societal structures often reduce a woman's value to her physical attractiveness, reinforcing the idea that any effort spent on appearance is a bid for external validation from the "intended" viewer—men.
2. Psychological Biases
Overestimation of Sexual Intent: Research shows men frequently overestimate women's sexual interest based on their clothing style. For example, studies found men rated their chances of having sex higher when women wore "suggestive" clothing, even if the women had no such intent.
Cognitive Dissonance: When men feel attraction to a woman's outfit, they may resolve the internal tension by assuming she wanted that reaction, rather than acknowledging that their response is independent of her motivation.
Projected Motivations: Men who are heavily invested in their own appearance to gain status or attention may project these same singular motivations onto women.
3. Historical and Societal Context
Dependency on Desirability: Historically, women’s economic and social well-being often depended on their desirability to men. While this has changed, the legacy of women "dressing for the ideal bachelor" remains a pervasive cultural trope.
Power and Control: In some cases, believing women dress for attention is linked to a desire for control. Men may view certain clothing as "disrespectful" in a committed relationship because they perceive those choices as active invitations to others.
Gendering of Fashion: Because fashion is often stereotyped as a "feminine" interest, men may dismiss its value as a form of self-expression, creative art, or a tool for confidence, instead seeing it only through a functional or sexualized lens.
In contrast, women's motivations are far more diverse, frequently rooted in self-expression, personal comfort, social dynamics with other women, or simply a desire to feel confident and powerful for themselves.
These articles explore how cultural socialization and psychological biases influence some men's belief that women dress for male attention, while also highlighting women's diverse motivations for choosing their attire.

4.9K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Women dressing up is ALWAYS for ATTENTION. How to check that supposition? Simply look how a woman looks if she knows she can't go out/can't be around other people for the next 12 hours - she won't be dressed up, thus, it's absolutely not "just for her." (Yes, extremely rare exceptions to this rule exist.)
Of course, (straight) women aren't ONLY seeking attention from men - they also very much enjoy getting attention from other women too. I think most men realize this. But many women outright lie (or live in delusion) and try to tell everyone that their dressing up ISN'T for male attention - that's a LIE. It may not ONLY be for men's attention, but it's ALWAYS for men's attention at least in part. ALWAYS.
There's a reason why women-only clubs - and women-only gyms, and many other women-only things - can't survive: women love to talk about loving life with their girls, but without men around, they VERY quickly get bored and want to go home - and they DAMN sure don't want to spend their own money.
Yes, no question, women ALSO like the attention the get from other women. That's real. It exists. But trying to pretend that male attention doesn't matter to them is pure bullshit.

Most men get it that we do it for ourselves not to attract them or at least those men we want attract.

5 moI don't know. I guess some men believe that women are constantly on the hunt for a mate / financial and emotional security blanket.
And some men are clueless to the competitive landscape of female group dynamics. Here's what I've come to believe after years of observation in life. Every woman is an individual so these are only general comments. And the percentages are only directionally correct (IMHO), not facts backed by any data. But with that said...
- Women dress to impress other women in their friend group or at work more than random men they may or may not encounter. That $5,000 Coach bag and those $1,000 Prada pumps or Gucci eyeglasses are all about counting coup on their girlfriends or other random women. Guys won't notice or care. I'll give this one a 60% of the time rating.
- Some women just have personal standards and dress well to make themselves feel good / confident. I'll give this a 20% of the time rating.
- And all women may or may not get dressed up if they are going out in public in the hope of meeting guys at a bar, club, restaurant, house party, etc. I'll give this the last 20% chunk of time.

5 moBecause that’s exactly why some women do it…. Depends on what type of dressing up. Wearing a swimsuit at the beach or pool? Maybe not so much. Dressing up on super revealing clothes to to to a club…. Well maybe if she’s into women as well. Many are doing it for attention and validation and boosting their ego…. And free shit. But again not all women do that.
Just like there is men…. Who boost their egos by seeking validation from the opposite sex. It’s painfully obvious when a woman’s doing the same thing… Obviously, most people would never have the humility to ever admit that. Because deep down… most people are ashamed they do it.
With that being said. Obviously, all women are different and not all act like that same with not all men act that way.

Can I dress up for a blow up doll? LMFAO
1.1K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Dressed to kill is for validation. Sure, a woman can go to all that trouble and expense to admire herself in the mirror. But when she goes out dressed to the nines and struts her stuff, she is looking for validation by noticing people's reactions, whether those people are male of female.
Men might just see her and think she looks hot. But women will evaluate everything about her appearance. They might admire or be critical of details from her hair style, makeup, clothes and accessories, to her shoes and hand bag, or they might even get jealous over the fact that she is getting more attention than them.
If she gets admiring looks or makes other women jealous, she knows she looks damn fine.
So I say it's about validation, but not necessarily for male attention. Then again, if she goes to a club or somewhere else where there are men, chances are that she wants attention from hot guys and will be happy to dance, accept drinks, and/or attract hungry looks.00 Reply1.2K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. First women do have a minimum standard for themselves to be in public. So I'd that is the first thing they dress for.
Women seem to be very pleased when they get compliments from other women. So I'd say that is the second level they dress for.
However women are most pleased when they they get good reactions from men. They'll use shop windows to check if you are still looking at them after they pass by. If a man looks at them with 'she's special' in their mind they are most pleased of all and have big smiles.
00 Reply14.3K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Women rarely dress up for men. It's for the attention of other women.
Guys don't care if you have the latest bag that matches your purse.
And the women who buy a new dress for every event they go to... Guys don't even notice nor do they care. You could literally wear the same dress 20 times21 Reply- 5 mo
Well said. Men who believe that “women dress to attract men” says more about how men are socialized than about women’s intentions.
4 moit's always for attention. Why? You live with any woman, she doesn't dress up to sit and watch TV, hair goes in a bun, only pj's or sweats or comfortable clothing goes on, no make up is applied and jewelry stays on the dresser.
The moment she wants to post something online, finds out she has to go out in public or someone is coming over, that changes and out steps the dressed up doll.

5 moI think it is due to what kind of outfits they choose to wear. Like when I was in High School, the girls tried to wear as little as possible. Reason? Or what about showing off cleavage. Reason? Or wearing outfits that are extremely tight and formfitting. Reason? What I'm saying is, many of the outfits are not designed for practicality. They are designed to show off beauty and not just beauty but sexiness, by even enhancing the features that make men the most horny.

m 5 moBecause they believe that women are some sort of incomprehensible aliens?
And instead of just getting to know them, like any other person, they ascribe women some sort of specific behaviors as if they were studying fucking entomology. But without sound science to help.

5 moBack in the 70's and 80's we had shows like Charlies Angels and Dukes of Hazard Later there was Baywatch. They were basic T&A, The plots were fairly thin, The major thrust of the show was Boobs and Butts. Network producers mad inquiries to the public and it was discovered that the individuals who were the majority of the viewers were female. women were interested in seeing ways to make themselves look better.

Women are allowed to do what they want to their appearance for self confidence or simply because they want to. What others see is irrelevant.03 Reply- 5 mo

Why do some women believe it isn’t?
What makes you so sure 100% of women don’t care about what men see?
Why is so hard to accept that people do things for different reasons?
So many questions…10 Reply- 2.8K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic.
5 mowe know it's also for other girls oppinions as well. that's litterally the only reason to dress up. if you say "no i do it for myself", ask further. why do you do it for yourself and what's the mechanism by which it makes you feel good. it's just ignorance and the fact people know you better than you know yourself emotionally that makes you disagree.

5 moMany times women do dress in a way to attempt to gather men's attention. I don't think this is the "only" reason they do it, but it is one very common reason.
It is so common that I think that suggesting that women never dress to get men's attention is further from reality than suggesting that women always dress to get men's attention.
00 Reply The more I learn about women I know for a fact its for mens attention OR rather its for the attention fix women need. It can always come very much from other women. Maybe more so. Women will scrutinize each other over anything its crazy from a guy's perspective, we do not do that, we dont know women do that, I heard from women how they operate and I still struggle to get it
00 Reply1.8K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Because feminists like to claim that women feel compelled by the patriarchy to dress in a certain way. I don't believe that is true, I am certain that 90% of the time women dress the way they do because they like to, but still feminists say that the "male gaze" compels them.
