Does this make me selfish?

My car burned in a garage fire when an air compressor shorted out and caught the shop on fire. An old friend of mine decided to give me a car. I didn't want to accept charity due to me being prideful but I needed a car so I accepted his offer. When it came time to swap the title I paid him what he wrote as the price on the title to make myself feel better. Does it make me a bad person for doing what I did for that reason?

I gave him money for the car to make myself feel better about it. I don't like free things that should cost 3,000$

I was raised that it was shameful to accept charity so I avoid it when possible but I had to this time so I would have a car to drive to work since mine burned in a fire
