A stranger claims you're her father—what would you do?

Consider this situation...

You are 50 years old. The doorbell rings. You answer it. There, a young woman says to you, "I think you are my father."

You think back to those short-term relationships you had when you were younger. Yes, there was sex involved, and you didn't always wear a condom.

Could she really be my daughter?

What would you do?

That actually happened to my father-in-law. An 18 year old guy showed up and knocked on his door, told him who his mother was and demanded money. I've been told that it got a bit ugly that evening. My father-in-law has 2 kids that he knows about from someone other than his wife but his kids think that there's probably a few more half siblings that they don't know about. He's 76 years old and hasn't stopped cheating on his wife

I would ask her mother's name and the location and approximate date when she was conceived, just to determine if there is a possibility that the claim is true. If so, then I would very kindly ask her to submit to a DNA paternity test so that we could both be certain of the truth.

I would talk to her and try to arrange a DNA test as soon as possible. Of course. Nothing beats DNA for reliable identification. I know this because as an adopted person I had to find my whole biological family using DNA including my biological father. I never appreciated how complicated genealogy really is and how time consuming it can be until I tried to do it myself. I've not yet used an AI for it, but I did hire a genealogist for a while and that was extremely helpful. If you're planning to do that kind of thing, seriously consider either using AI or hiring a genealogist because if you go down this rabbit hole you may have a long time getting out of it if you ever do.

I would talk to her extensively to see just who her mother is, to see if this is even possible. If it looked possible, I'd do a blood test. The last time I had sex without a condom was over 20 years ago, so she would have to be over 20. (Except sometimes condoms fail but it would be highly unlikely.)

I have a pretty low body count and know what happened to all of them. It could not be possible.

This happened to my father in law. He acknowledged having had sex with the girls mother, did DNA testing, introduced my wife to her half sister and wrote her into the will.

I would agree to a DNA test and let her down gently when it comes back negative. I am congenitally sterile and know I cannot be the father, but the child does not need harshness from me.
