Don't be Hangry

Hangry (Hungry and angry) is something I and a lot of people can probably relate to. If you look at my profile history, you can see that the responses I gave in the past hour were more provocative, off topic, and ridiculous than the ones I normally give. That's because I was hangry.

Don't be Hangry

I know what you're thinking. THIS is your excuse. How lame. Perhaps it is a lame excuse and perhaps its lame that hunger affects me so much, but it does. If you and I were stuck on a desert Island with no source of food, I'd probably eat you within a day. Moral of the story- don't get stuck on a desert island with me, and don't let yourself become Hangry.

An hour ago, before I ate I was thinking about doing a myTake listing off how great I was as a joke. That would have been a complete waste of space. Not to mention pointless. But after snacking on some crackers, I am not feeling so bothered and irritated.

That's what the cracker looked like before I ate it. After a few crackers though, they began to look like...

My point is that your perception of anything can change when you are hungry. I become more pessimistic, less cooperative and, to be honest, way more obnoxious than usual.

But don't just take my word for it, take science's word for it.

Don't be Hangry

So now that I've (hopefully) shown that this is an actual issue, here are a few solutions to the issue.

1. Always carry snacks

Don't be Hangry

I love snacks. If I was allowed to, I would probably marry them. Snacks don't have to be unhealthy. In another picture of "snacks" I saw M&M's and rice krispies and stuff- WTF? Those aren't snacks. Those are sweets. Snacks are things like peanuts, chips, and pretzels. In moderation, they can be good for you and even beneficial for your long term health (depending on the snack.)

Always have a bag of snacks. Good stuff, not raisins and stuff you don't want to eat but feel obligated to because they are healthy. If you work in an office, bring some guacamole to have with your chips. If you are prone to Hanger you should certainly have snacks between you and your house if you aren't at your house. As you can see in the diagram, people who are prone to it should definitely not be driving when hungry.

2. Eat larger, more balanced meals

You know that feeling you get after having some delicious food at a restaurant. That feeling where you don't want more food, because you can't imagine how it could compare to what you just ate. When you feel satisfied and happy. That's a great feeling to recreate.

Try having breakfasts more like what you'd have at a restaurant. This doesn't mean putting ice cream on your waffles like they do at many popular fast food chains

This means having more complex breakfasts. Don't just have pancakes, have eggs too. The more filling and satisfying your breakfasts are, the less you'll feel the need to eat throughout the day. If anything, eating more filling meals will help you lose weight.

For lunch try eating a grilled cheese with veggies and some sort of meat. Try having sides with your meals like at restaurants.

3. Pack a nutrition drink of some sort

A lot of nutrition drinks have a ton of sugar, so you have to do some research to find one that doesn't

(No idea what a blastcap is)

I should specify what I mean by nutrition drink. I mean something like ensure but with less sugar. Not gatorade or coke or other "energy" drinks.

4. (Optional) liquid meals

If you can stand consuming food in this form, try liquidizing a burger and drinking it throughout the day. I personally wouldn't be able to, but if you can, have at it.

In conclusion, don't let yourself be hangry. Ultimately that is still your fault because there are measures you can take to alleviate throughout the day hunger.
