A Few Small Tips on Handling Anxiety

Hallo, everybody. Been a while since I last made a half way decent take. I am supposed to be working right now so if this one doesn't turn out to be any good, let's go ahead and blame it on that.

So, I have anxiety. I'm not diagnosed, but trust me. When you have it, you know you have it.

A Few Small Tips on Handling Anxiety

There won't be many tips here, just a few that I've heard and the ones that work for me. I don't think there are a lot of ways to handle anxiety and especially the attacks that work for a wide range of people. There are a lot of methods, yes, but for every individual, only a few of which that work. And of those few, not all of them will work every time.

Which sucks. Big time.

1. Breathing.

Pff, obvious tip is obvious. Every time a person is suffering from anxiety, or even just simply upset, the first thing they get told is to breathe. Just, breathe.

But it does help. It helps the most, for me at least, to have somebody tell me to slow down. Slow my breathing until I feel like I'm inhaling and exhaling absurdly slow.

But if you're alone or don't like accepting help, counting works.

What I do, is I breathe in however slowly as I can manage, then hold it for eight seconds (If you're getting pretty far into panicking and holding it for that long isn't doable, shorten it to four seconds then go higher as you feel capable) breathe out for eight seconds, hold for eight seconds, breathe in for eight seconds, repeat.

(There's also a 2/4/6/8 breathing technique that is the same concept, I haven't tried it, but I can see how it could be effective.)

2. Focusing.

This isn't a technique that really works for me, but I've heard of it working for others. This is in line with timing your breaths, as you do need to focus to keep track of how long you're breathing for.

Basically what this one is, or at least what I've gathered it is, is that you have a list of things to find. You look around the room or area that you're in, and you try to find this many of this item, or that many of that item.

(I can see how this would help some, but personally I'm too focused inwards to see what's happening externally. That's just me though.)

3. Analyzing. (as in don't)

Actually this is one for the don't pile. I have found (though this may be obvious to some, it definitely wasn't to me) that analyzing what I felt during a past attack has really only recreated those feelings. Not as strongly, but if I get to deep into remembering I'm sure I'll only end up causing an attack that could have been very much prevented.

So yeah, just don't try to analyze what happened. The feelings leading up to? Yes. So you can recognise them next time and hopefully avoid having one. But the feelings during, no.

Yup. That is the limit of my abilities. Cannot think up anymore. Hm.
