It Happened to Me: I Have Diabetes

Last night I went to the emergency room because for the last few days I have had anxiety and felt depressed. I had also had an unquenchable thirst and been peeing a lot more than usual. I thought maybe it was my job since I work in a call center and talk a lot. But they checked my blood sugar and asked about my family history of diabetes.

My blood sugar was at 492. They admitted me to the ER, took blood and hooked me to an IV and gave me insulin. I was scared because the thought never occurred to me.

The doctor put me on glucophage for the next thirty days so I can get to a primary care doctor. I am currently trying to learn more and get into the habit of checking my sugar and getting a medical id bracelet.

I will admit my lifestyle has never been good. I have always found comfort in food and loved food and still do. But with my new journey I will have to learn to control myself and watch my intake. Don't get me wrong, I can still have the occasional ice cream or hamburger etc... But not make it a common occurrence.

I know I'm going to have to deal with new things I'm not proud of like sticking myself daily to get blood, wearing an Id bracelet, and probably peeing a lot for a while and other side effects of my medicine. But I feel like it's something I can take care of. I admit I am scared.

Sometimes I wonder why is it some people can eat anything and be in good health but another person can eat the same and be diabetic or other diseases? There's a lot of things I still don't understand. I just need help.
