My dad just found out he's a diabetic, how can I help him out?

My dad was very sick for the past week or so. He got blood work done and it was found that he had extremely high amoumts of blood sugar; a condition of a type 2 diabetic. Do you know of any possible ways I can help him out healthwise?

yeah my dad is diabetic too!
just check his blood sugar level on a regular basis
have a close look to what he eats/drinks (avoid alcoholic drinks, pastries, too oily stuffs also)
if he likes to eat banana tell him too AVOID those which are too ripe... they have too high sugar content.. instead he could consume those who are less ripe (but not too often)
tell him to consume oats which is full of benefits for people with diabetes...
and also make sure he is wearing comfortable shoes (tight shoes should not be worn) and that he is well taking care of his foot... VERY IMPORTANT (because he should totally avoid being injured in the foot!!!)
and just make sure he is having his insuline injections as directed by physician!!

How old is your Dad? Do you know what his a1c is? My Dad is a type 2 diabetic too. He was taking Metformin but started taking Ozempic in May. Ozempic is a weekly shot but it suppose to really work well.

I'm very sorry to hear that. My brother is a Type 1 diabetic. It's a horrible disease:(

My advice to you would be this:

-Learn everything you can about the disease itself and how it affects the body systems.
-Learn what to look for in terms of symptoms of high and low blood sugars.
-Learn the process of giving insulin to a diabetic.
-Learn what to do for a diabetic in case of a blood sugar emergency.
-Encourage healthy eating and an active lifestyle.
-But most importantly, give him your support and encouragment. It will definitely be a complete lifestyle change for him and your support will mean a lot.

My dad is type II diabetic.

Don't give him junk food, encourage him to exercise and eat healthy food only. Keep a close eye on him if they are giving him insulin medication and If he is acting drunk even if he didn't drink and lays down and passes out, make sure to revive him so he doesn't go into diabetic shock.

You will find his mood will change if he has really high or low blood sugar levels, don't be surprised if he is grumpy.

Make sure he eats healthily for himself, and you should also eat similar to him.

Get him to exercise more. Often type two diabetes is developed by bad life style choices, a lot of people who develop it are overweight and have a poor diet.

If this is your dad, go with him on walks, suggest healthy foods, reduce alcohol intake etc. Also, diet changes can be greatly beneficial. For instance, white bread is very unhealthy and contains a lot of sugar, multi-grain bread is a better alternative.

I agree that overweight people are frequently type 2 diabetics. My Dad has it but he is not overweight, doesn't drink, and runs seven miles a day. Not sure why he has it except his doctor said if his parents had it he has a high risk of also getting it. Both of his parents were also type 2 diabetics.

Make sure he eats healthy and stays away from too much sugar/ unhealthy food. I'm a type 1 diabetic, and everything is fine as long as I check by blood sugar regularly and give myself insulin to cover the food i eat. Type 2 is a little different, but if he is very obese, try to get him to become just a little active. Exercise can go a long way if you have T2 Diabetes.

Balanced meals is key. Meat, veggies, fruit, dairy, bread. Regular a1ccheck ups at doctor to monitor blood sugar levels an trends

Prepare healthy foods for the whole family and monitor her blood glucose level (there are easy to use kit available in the pharmacy)
