Anonymous(36-45)+1 yInteresting when you say "Religious" people you think it's only "People who read the Bible." Other religions teach similarly. There are plenty of people who are fat, religious, and not "Christians."
To the one who said "Christians pick and choose," we read the Bible in context, we understand that through Christ, the law of the old testament was fulfilled. Those laws point out to us, that we all need a Savior (who is Christ Jesus), and that there is NO POSSIBLE way that any human can ever live a life "good enough" to receive God's favor. The sacrifice Christ made provided a freedom for a Christian. Christ himself said that the two greatest commandments were "to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength," and "Love your neighbor as yourself." All of God's commandments can be wrapped up into those two.
Some Christians abuse the freedom we have, true. Some of us though have genuine medical issues that make it harder to lose weight, no matter how good we eat, or exercise, (like Hypothyroidism). Or in my sisters case, cancer caused her to gain a lot of weight. Don't assume that JUST BECAUSE someone is FAT, automatically means they are gluttons (which is actually WHAT THAT VERSE SAYS).
Funny how Christians are told to not judge anyone (by everyone), yet everyone else seems to think it's okay for them to judge Christians... *hmm*05 Reply

Do tell about the amazing context that can justify slaughter of babies, murder of sons/daughters for disobedience, incest and a slew of other atrocities committed be either god himself or his "holy" people. There is none and don't even try it on me. You're gonna have a very hard time arguing against an ex-Christian, who became atheist after reading the bible cover to cover.
I never said all fat people are gluttons. However, claiming obese people in the modern world with abundance of cheap fatty foods are obese because they have a "condition" is outright bullshit. It's just a convenient excuse lazy slobs use, because nobody can honestly prove them wrong, unless they're a medical expert and conduct some examinations. - +1 y
Only a very small percentage of obese people have a medical condition that prevents them from being of a healthy weight for their height, body and age. The overwhelming majority's "condition" is they have no self-restrain to shut their cake holes.
Also, Christians are told not to judge, because a lot of self-righteous Christians claim to be god fearing, but fail to follow their own scriptures. Secular people don't have to follow a rule book of another religion, Christians do.
Judging, while not a very nice thing to do, is not written in a "secular bible", so for us it is "okay".
Asker+1 yHow is incest an atrocity? Is homosexuality atrocity too?
Opinion Owner+1 yI am obese, for me personally, it took the doctors awhile to pin point it. I eat healthy, in moderation, mostly fruits and vegetables. They were finally able to pinpoint it to my thyroid, and I am now on medication to get that in order, and hey guess what, I'm finally losing the weight I've been TRYING to lose for years now! I know NOT all people are obese because of medical conditions, but some are.
I can't change your mind, or your heart, only God has the power to do so, if He chooses. I am not going to continue commenting further, as I do not think it will do any good for either one. We both are obviously set in our beliefs, and I don't judge you for yours. Have a good day.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yWhile I haven't studied theology, I do understand some of the basics. Christians today are not bound by all OT laws, but the law of Christ. This does contain some OT laws, but not all. Please do some decent research before trying to condemn a group of people.

Asker+1 yJesus said himself that ALL old laws are still in place.
+1 yThe bible is also a rendition of a story written in a book that has been paraphrased and translated from the beginning of biblical time. So who knows, maybe they meant you're supposed to give fat people a knife, so they can cut what they're eating so they don't get it lodged in their throat.

Asker+1 yDoesn't happen like that. There might be slight differences in translation but nothing so major.

That's the argument that's been used to justify interpretations of the bible since it's inception. =P

Christians don't follow the bible to the letter, just cherry pick the verses they like and feel are "correct".

What is this political correctness you speak of? Tis a foreign concept to me.
+1 yI can give another interpretation of that - you should not use up all the natural resources for yourself, e. g., a glutton. You should not be greedy. I think that's what it means. I believe in the good messages given by the holy books, doesn't matter which religion (I'm not a christian). There is a word for people who purposely twist the good words - its called "pervert."

Asker+1 yThat interpretation doesn't make sense if the time period when this verse was written is taken into consideration.

Please explain why it depends on the time period.

There is a saying - Its better to live on the edge always, coz otherwise you are occupying too much space!
I will clarify my stand once again. I think it means we are not supposed to eat another man's food. Just like not desiring others' money, or women, or possessions.
We all know being fat doesn't always totally depend on what you do. It could be genes too. So, how can religion make fun of such a small thing as obesity when there are far bigger crimes?
PS: It could also be a sort of encouragement for people to do fasting and prayer, which can lead to purification. At its simplest, its a good health advice! (I'm not referring to the knife thing, I think its just a literary technique to make the point stand out). - +1 y

You'll find parts of the Bible where incest was condoned, and daughters were having their "wicked way" with their father.
- +1 y
I haven't read the Bible in detail, but I have a general theory on incest/adultery. Holy books cannot support such things. However, condoning sinners is only to show mercy on them, as religion is all about forgiveness. I think we should take it in that spirit.

Isaiah 34:731 ReplyThe Bible doesn't say that... But anyways, it's because all people deal with some sort of temptation or struggle. For some it is gluttony, for others it's something else.

No. Does not say that. Also don't take what some of it says in the bible, in a literal way, there's a deeper meaning to it. ...
