I use briquettes because It's a good balance between wood & lump coal, in terms of heat vs flavor.

If you can't get lump then get a metal chimney to get briquets really hot, even a fan or bellows, then after that steaks, etc. are good to go. Briq + wood is excellent for smoking. Lump is best for high heat, fast cooking. I like briquettes for smoking.
Wood in my opinion. I don't like smell of the others.
