Depends on what you're making and how long you want it to smoke really. Quicker meals benefit from briquettes while smoking things like fish always do best with wood since the wood flavor actually gets into the... I'm hungry.
I BBQ all the time (weather is awesome in southern California )
I use briquettes because It's a good balance between wood & lump coal, in terms of heat vs flavor.

If you can't get lump then get a metal chimney to get briquets really hot, even a fan or bellows, then after that steaks, etc. are good to go. Briq + wood is excellent for smoking. Lump is best for high heat, fast cooking. I like briquettes for smoking.
Wood in my opinion. I don't like smell of the others.
