Getting wisdom teeth removed... what can I expect?

I realize this is quite a common procedure but I am TERRIFIED. Just heard the news today that I'll get my 4 removed but one of them will be more difficult to get out :'( I almost started crying when I heard because i have never had to get any kind of operation..

So gaggers... please tell me how your experience was with getting your wisdoms pulled! I'll be going to the hospital and will be given general anesthesia so I'm not too worried about the actual procedure but I am worried a lot about the after pain :(

well first decide if you will have local anesthesia or not, if you get put under then the experience will be less scary, but if you don't then it depends how many wisdom teeth you will be removing that day, I had all 4 removed at the same time and the procedure took about 2-3 hours. I was awake the entire time, it kinda sucked. they shot up my entire mouth full of numbess, that kind hurt poking my gum multiple times. then they told me... if you feel pain during the procedure then let me know so I can numb you again, I was like wow really? there's a fucking chance of that happening? FML.

the real advice... GET YOUR PAINKILLERS ASAP! you'll have around 45 minutes once the procedure is done until you go into a coma of pain, so get your painkillers quick and take them a bit early so they can kick in before your mouth begins to hurt. also, you'll be spitting up blood for a while so keep a rag or bucket on ya.

I'd also maybe a day or two after recommend warm water and salt it will help heal the gums if you can stand it, it could just be my case but the anesthesia wasn't powerful enough for me they had to use twice as much but i has to be put to sleep as they had to fiddle about with the nerves in my gum, again just in my case, there will be pain yes but it won't be unbearable just keep using painkillers and make sure to drink plenty of water... i'm not sure whether it was just me but they stitched up the gum with stitches that dissolved, it took about just under 2 hours for me but within half an hour i was out of hospital and on my way home, you'll feel tired and a bit rough for a good few hours after too so i'd recommend rest once the bleeding dies down, lay on your side though, this was just my preference but a little water too to help spit the blood as opposed to spitting it out dry mouth but what ever helps you best i guess.
It's a simple quick procedure, as Bert says basically.

It's basically nothing at all if you go to a competent dentist. I had them all removed and 3 were easy. There is some discomfort afterwards, and you have to be careful with the wound for a couple of days, and take antibiotics. I've seen much worse, like the other tooth. For one wisdom tooth I had to go to a quack senile old man dentist because that's all I could afford at the time. It was a horrible experience and I have blocked out some of it. It was like 2 hrs of torture. On the plus side, it made me loathe the bourgeoisie even more.

The only pain you'll experiance is the needle going into your cheek or gum, the pulling of the tooth just feels awkward as hell kind of uncomfortable but what's I hated the most was afterwards...

It's not as bad as you think (in my experiance) I cried my little heart out when they told me I was about 12 or 11 ahah.

They also told me that they'll never grow back but 5-6 years later They came through again but they down know about that 😎😎😎😎😎

I just got mine out like 3 weeks ago. They give you some strong pain medicine so after the first few days that isn't much of a problem. The worst part for me was that you can't really eat anything. You can have soup, smoothies, pudding, jello, ice cream, or just anything soft. I think I had the general anesthesia too and I didn't feel pain for a couple hours. Most of the time after your surgery you will probably sleeping so again that pain shouldn't be a problem then. When you are sleeping keep your head up so you don't choke on the blood. They will also give you a syringe that you have to rinse you mouth out with. You have to eat with your front 2 teeth you can't get food in the area you teeth got pulled at if you will do you could get a dry socket and you will be in a lot of pain.

I've had braces too and remember the pain. It was absolutely awful. So I guess this makes me feel better than if you say the pain isn't as bad.

General anesthesia is actually not needed at all and I don't understand why anyone would get it for something so simple as a wisdom tooth removal. I got local anesthesia and was completely fine during and after the surgery. I liked not having to feel groggy for the entire day afterwards. The after pain might suck but keep popping pain killers like crazy and you'll be fine in a week.
Why are you getting all 4 removed in one go? Are they all causing trouble? I would actually suggest only getting one side done at a time, since you'll be able to chew solid food a lot faster. I was able to chew the day after since half of my mouth was fine. If I had gotten both sides done I probably wouldn't have been able to chew solid food within a week.

Unfortunately as explained in my question there are complications with my one wisdom tooth and it's not in right position for getting pulled out like any standard wisdom tooth. It is going to require special work so they have to put me under general anesthesia for it. That specific tooth has the potential to do a lot of damage according to my orthodontist so they have to get it out before it starts pushing my other teeth. They are going to take it all out to avoid future problems and as he says if they go through the hassle of getting that one removed they might as well take the rest out which are in easier positions to remove.

Ok. But I still think it's silly to get all of them removed just because one is causing you trouble. My mom for instance only had one of her wisdom teeth removed, none of the others gave her trouble. I've only had one wisdom tooth pulled out so far too, and ever since that I haven't had problems. I would honestly talk to your orthodontist and try to get him to extract the teeth on only one side, as extracting all 4 in one go makes the healing process much slower and complicated, especially in terms of eating food and such.

I'm going to trust the experts here. They have all been to colleges and have decades of experience so I'm not going to second guess their decision. I've trusted my orthodontist for 14 years now with my teeth and he has never let me down. He knows what he is doing.

Yes I know, I'm just saying that the healing process would be easier if you had one side removed at a time. That's just a fact since you would get to eat solid food a lot faster and you wouldn't be in as much pain. You would be in twice as much pain and you would only be able to eat with your front teeth, compared to being in half as much pain and actually being able to chew with half of your mouth. I'm just saying that I personally think it would be the more comfortable option.

he didn't believe in any pain medication just Novocain i was awake
when i had it done and had no stitches afterwards so lets say i went
about 48 hours of pain with still feeling him yanking my mouth it was horrible.

I had three of my four removed at one time. I was expecting a lot of pain afterwards too. But it was not bad at all. There was only some occasional discomfort for a couple of days. I was back at work after missing 1 day (not including the surgery day). You will look like a chipmunk with a mouth full of peanuts for a week or so though. LOL!

I had all four of mine removed at the same time when I was about your age. I was scared thinking about it, but it didn't actually hurt as bad as I thought it would. I am sure you'll be fine. Just don't try to drink anything out of a straw for a few weeks afterwards.

I've had it done as a 12 year old... expect swelling of your cheeks immediately after the surgery. It will be uncomfortable though in my case, not real pain was involved.
They cooled it with ice packages and that stopped the swelling after a few hours.
Next was a day or 3 of eating soft food to avoid damaging the stitches.
It's not too bad in the end... expect discomfort but you'll be okay :D

Don't worry you're making it much worse than it really is by panicking. You'll go in they put you under and then you wake up. They'll have you on pain killers for a week or two after. You'll feel sore but you shouldn't have too much pain at all. Mine seriously wasn't bad at all. Just eat soups for a day or two. You'll just be really drowsy and sleepy when on the drugs so you'll need someone to drive you home. It won't be that bad, promise.

I had all 4 of mine removed about 5 years ago. The procedure itself wasn't that bad, I was just really sore and swollen for about a week after. Don't be scared. They put me under general anesthesia so I don't even remember the actual operation. Lol

Let me say. The pain I felt before getting them removed was so intense. So I could not care the operation at all. It is really nothing. You will just feel pain that day; that is it.

I had mine removed in my mid-twenties. The operation went well. I was in no pain at all the next day and was in very little pain the night after the surgery. I was put under general anesthesia and was super nervous about it as well. But in the end it was nothing to worry about I was only under less than an hour with all four getting removed.

Oh I forgot my mouth was more sore from getting braces the first couple of weeks than it was from the actual removal of my wisdom teeth.

It is fine. I got mine removed last year. (I was 14). It does not hurt at all. Just be sure to go completely under. If they give you the gas you will be awake and hear them drilling and cutting. Other than that expect some swelling and keep the gaws in.

The reason why I ask is because I've had wisdom teeth problems before and when I went to the dentist they said the same shit. "Oh yeah you gon have to get those taken out." I didn't get shit taken out. I canceled that shit. All it was was food particles had gotten into my wisdom tooth gum and swelled it up. I took some penicillin for a while and it disappeared.

Now if you got your wisdom teeth cutting into your gum then yeah that's a problem. But if it's just swollen then don't go get them taken out. They just tryna make money off you.

Because this one is complex to remove the orthodontist said I must just get them all taken out so it's over and done with considering the hassle they'll have to go through with the one. Ohhh. Then yeah maybe that one should get taken out. The rest? I'm not convinced HAVE to. Sure they are going to do their job and say "Yeah yeah get them all out." Still I guess it's up to you. I'd hate to be under anesthesia though. Especially considering that they only keep you breathing just enough to stay alive. Not only that but some of the medical personnel are getting in trouble for talking shit about the people they are operating on while that person is under anesthesia.
