Is it true? :P
Peeps, when in the gym, do you lift first or start cardio?
Is it true? :P
Any kind of physical activity will increase the metabolism for that moment. Jogging will increase your metabolism (burn more calories) than lifting weights while you're doing it. That's true, doing some cardio can help warm muscles up which can prevent an injury. You can warm up with weights as well but yeah I do think cardio warms the body up better. If you start with weights I would just make sure your body isn't cold (like you walked in the guy from cold weather) and do a light rep or two before heavy weights (I'd do that before each new muscle group imo). The order you do an exercise doesn't influence calories used.
Both ways are okay. I personally prefer doing weights first. Lighting weights uses a higher percentage of glucose in the blood as energy and that kind of energy can significantly deplete after an hour or so. Cardio uses a higher percentage of fat as energy and it's not like many of us don't have enough fat to use :p
So yeah I think cardio is much better for getting the body loose and warm for weights but it's not necessary. If you want you can do like 5 minutes of cardio as a warm up. I would rather have more explosive energy when lifting the weights and do a majority of cardio last.
It depends what you're goal is... im pretty sure i know the science so tell me your goal and ill explain why its better to do either or
If you want to just tone a little up and from looking at you, it wouldn't make a difference if you do cardio before or after. In fact interval training is pretty good, where you do weights then run a lap... do weight then run a lap
But ideally id say do cardio whenever you want, as in what feels most comfortable for you. But focus on weights to build muscles as a priority. You can do some cardio for health benefits if you like. But you won't need it. Lifting heavy weights will be enough of a metabolism boost for you.
If you are trying to build muscle but also burn off fat... Youd want to do weights first because youd want to use your glycogen and glucose for the lifting, which requires a lot of energy.. Basically the energy from the food you ate youd want to use that for weights. If you do cardio first, it won't burn fat until all the glucose storage is depleted...
Yes exactly. The body burns carbohydrates (glucose) first, then it will go to fat and finally protein. You want carbs for lifting weights but you want low carb storage for cardio to burn fat.
So with that info you can easily formulate when it would suit you best, which is pretty much anytime you want too. For health reasons (healthy heart) as long as you do any form of cardio its awesome and since you dont really need to lose fat... is why Im saying just do it anytime when you feel comfortable.
But really focus more on weights and body core exercises.
Have More questions? π
hahaha thanks ^^
I ve always been more of a cardio person the weight lifting though. I just do the basic stuff.
I am pretty thin and gain definition pretty fast from previous experiences. So I don t think I am gonna stress that much on weights, at least not heavy weights. what do you usually do?
Cardio person is good... and clearly it shows π
I wish i could do more cardio, i do jump rope and some jogging. Mostly jumping rope and hitting the punching bag. So fun
Summer Time ill bike for a few hours. Mostly road biking, so the ones with the thin tires like in tour de france. For gymming, its mostly weights but now im slowing down on that big time and going for just casual healthy type of exercises.
I know you dont wanna do weights but weights is what will shape you. And since you dont need to lose fat, after one year youd make a lot of girls jealous, if you already dont βΊοΈ
There's a lot of truth to the burning calories bit but I always do 15 to 20 minutes cardio first because I feel that it warms up my muscles better.
Lately I save my intense cardio for separate sessions because when I do a good lifting workout I don't have strength for cardio after.
I don't really 'lift' but I do leg lifts/arm curls (6lbs) first. No real reason, I just like to get those over with first. I spend the bulk of my time on cardio so since that warms up my core/legs, I then do leg raises, plank, and any other exercises focused on core after.
yeah in that case, probably best to do most of your lifting after cardio too. The more warmed up your muscles are, the less tension there'll be so less likely to hypothetically tear a muscle. Also don't stretch before cardio. I always hear it's important to stretch before and after a workout, only to later learn that stretching pre-warm up is actually pretty risky in terms of pulling a muscle in case you over-stretch or whatever. Ironically enough. :P

Personally, I don't work out like that. My main priority is to get a bit of blood flowing throughout the limbs before I do any strenuous lifting. So I might do a bit of Tan Tui before hand:

Then I'll just prioritise cardio or body weight/lifting exercises, usually one of the other on a day, depending on what my body needs. If it's too contracted I'll do more running or stretching or other awareness practice. If I'm too stagnant, not active enough throughout the day, or too relaxed, I'll break my muscles down to buggery :)
I exercise like I study. When I study, I build my knowledge on a concept, then I apply the concept. When I exercise, I build muscle, then I apply those muscles. Lifting is like reading the material whereas running is like doing practice problems. In other words, I would agree with your friend.
the only way I do cardio on the same day is if its either directly after a strength routine or its first thing in the morning during an entirely different work out. Cardio drains too much energy if you're doing anything substantial. If you want to use cardio as a warm up all you need to do is walk for 10-30 minutes
I have 8 hours of free time every day, I used to exorcize for that amount of time for an entire year.
You don't really notice metabolic changes, they are very minor, the body is very good at regulating itself, you'll have a standard metabolic rate for your body when you do intense workouts on a regular basis, they don't increase or decrease, they just adapt to how much energy and food you I/O.
I agree with @ConsultantIsBack for guys at least it's difficult to justify not devoting all your energy to pushing through heavy sets
For you though I may consider the opposite since you probably just want to tone and not get all Ronda Rousey
by the way @archiz not mad at the new pic... not mad at it at all
Agree, whatever your fitness focus is make that your primary/first task. Cardio, toning with heavy weights, etc.
Thanks βΊ
I separate the days; cardio one day and lifting the next. I find it's much easier on your body and you get the same results (and each workout session isn't as long). :)
Yeah, don't have time for that. I do one hour every day, six days a week, alternating rowing for my cardio and free weights.
He but it all ways best to do some cardio first as part of your warm up. Get the heart pumping and your blood pressure up so your muscles are we oxygenated and warm for weight work.
You are young and supple novelties few years time it will be very important you both warm up and down as your muscle have less natural flexibility. It's good practice to get in.
I'm going to agree, cardio is like warming up your car for 10 minutes in the snow before you actually start driving, cardio gets blood flowing through the body including muscles making it easier to stretch muscles without o much strain, you may even feel less sore afterwards.
@AshlieMarie alright thanks for the infos :)
Yes your friend is correct, plus I feel like if I do cardio first I have less energy to lift, so that's also why I choose to lift first because I'll have more energy
Thanks babe, I really appreciate the compliment π
Lift and then do some cardio. I just want to prioritize my energy on lifting weights. Ya it def can help you loosen up, metabolism is all heart rate tho, so do both to get your heart rate up!
Lift always. Cardio after. After a workout your body is in a different mode. You will burn fat instead of muscle if you do cardio post workout.
The one who trained me told me it is better to begin with 10-15 minutes of cardio and then go on with lifting and cool down should be "until you are exhausted" with jogging or running or walking.
I do cardio first to warm up my muscles. Just 10 mins so I won't be tired when comes to lifting. If I'm planning on doing a lot of cardio I won't lift in that session.
Hmmm... when I go to the gym, I usually look at dem tight asses tbh lol XD. And yeah, it helps with my "metabolism" :P.
I do weights first, then run a mile. Once I get my miles down to my goal time, I'm going to start running longer distances and introducing an incline.
Yes it is lift then WALK all you have to do is walk after you lift
I've normally gone to cardio first (bikes etc)
Then lifted
Then did sit ups/medicine balls etc
yeah, weighted balls you use for added resistance.
Or you can use loose weights too
I hate cardio like literally 😂 but I do the cardio first to warm up a bit 😛
Just start whatever I plan do to. So if it's leg day, 5 minutes on a track then the actual workout.
@archiz lol I am tagging you for no reason! <3 My special person!
my answer: I cardio and than lift!
I warm up with light cardio every day except leg day. And have nothing but cardio days. Shouldn't really mix the two except for a light warm up to get your heart rate up and the blood flowing.
