You eat fewer calories than you burn. It's simple!

It's also not easy, for most of us. The biggest questions you need to figure out are what method of losing weight is psychologically the easiest for you. A few general points:

    - diet change has to do the heavy lifting here, exercise supplements that. But unless you're working out 10+ hours a week, you can do way too much damage with your mouth to cover via exercise.
    - you might be interested to know that resistance exercise (like weights, though there are alternatives) are better associated with losing and keeping weight off than cardio. Cardio is good, weights are likely better because they help you preserve lean muscle mass (i. e. muscle) while dieting, which helps maintain your metabolism.

Specific to me, you may be different:
    - i personally can't stand calorie counting, so i don't do it
    - i dislike not eating whatever i want. if i'm not going to eat whatever i want, i want to see real progress on the scale
    - i'd rather eat very cleanly and well 19 meals a week and eat whatever i want the other 2, then eat slightly modified/ruined versions of what i like 21 meals a week.
Those are all me, they may not be you.

Given that, i've used fairly aggressive (though healthy) diet techniques when i've wanted to lose weight. I should probably drop 15 lbs or so myself, and i'm thinking every day i should start, lol. I've dropped 20+ in a month before. Text me if you want specifics on what -i- do, but remember, the right diet approach is the one you feel happiest with.

    "How do I lose 40 to 70 lbs? "

With a lifestyle change. You are not going to succeed without it. Change what, when, and how you put into your own mouth.

Getting obese/overweight takes time and an individual worth any respect shouldn't let themselves go. Fixing your mistakes won't take a month or two, you took maybe a year to get that fat? Expect 2 years to get down to normal.

It took three years, actually, including a divorce and medication. I have a sedentary job and have been working insane hours as well, totally stressed and then eating fast food or eating out because I'm starving and I'm tired and I just need to eat something. So, I know where its coming from and I'm off the medication that made it so tough for me to function.

So, yeah, I'll be happy if I can shed 10 pounds before a wedding in the spring and keep it off.

"... then eating fast food or eating out because I'm starving and I'm tired and I just need to eat something"

You can lose weight eating just fast food. It's obviously not healthy but it's entirely possible. ALL, did I mention ALL, fast food change must have calorie labels and nutritional information provided in store. Count the calories of what you want to order. Don't eat/drink the entire thing in one sitting. Save it for later. American portion sizes are too big for one person. Take it to go. Save yourself some money and eat leftovers.

Honestly, I'd recommend a meal plan. Eat mostly the same thing over and over again that you know how many calories it is. Save the desserts for ACTUAL celebrations or rewards. Ahem --losing 10 pounds isn't anything celebrate about, have some shame. People are SUPPOSE to maintain a healthy weight-- Cut out all sweet drinks, replace with water.

Small, but persistent changes that become a new lifestyle. I also gained 20 lbs over the past two years due to a sedentary job paired with emotional upheaval (two deaths and dad getting cancer on my end), so I hear you that it's hard.

Replacing junk food with healthy food, portion control and building up and exercise routine are all vital. Finding new coping habits, like meditating or journaling when you feel stressed or sad are helpful.

A lot of people find online communities like Sparkspeople very helpful. I like the My Fitness Pal app to tracks intake, myself. Those "Eat This, Not That" books are a good start to learning about nutrition.

    BMI is remarkably unreliable.

Calculate your body fat percentage instead.

You may still be overweight, but BMI does not account for muscle mass. If you want to get in shape, change your lifestyle. Start being more active and altering what you're fueling your body with.

Make a schedual and try to keep it. Eat healthier or count calories of the food you eat.

BMI isn't to be taken too seriously, I don't know how much you weigh and I won't ask
but unless you find your physical abilities impaired by it, it's not too much of a problem.

Don't put too much into that BMI calculator! It says I'm obese to (and other people I know) and we could loose some weight sure but we're not what I would call obese at all. Without seeing you I'm going to assume that you are in this category to.

Eat healthy and work out regularly. Its not easy but its worth it. How often do you exercise? How many calories on average do you eat a day?

I don't count calories. It's incedibly difficult to take every ingredient in a meal and enter it into a caculator. You have to measure and weigh it all. My salad today had lettuce, shredded carrot and cabbage, a little goat cheese, a few nuts.

Obviously its hard to count calories. But I do it and so do many other people. There's even apps now that you put in what you've ate and it calculates calories for you. Super easy. It doesn't have to be exactly correct. Just a ball park number. And if you're serious, you'll exercise 5-7 times a week to lose weight and 3-5 days a week to maintain weight.

Right, but you have to put the amount into the app. That's what I meant.

Just how many oz or cups of food which is super easy to measure. All I'm saying is if you want to lose weight bad enough it will take hard work and dedication.

Right but I just put a little cheese on. Like a Tbsp. I have no idea how many oz. I'd have to buy a teeny scale to weigh it. Lol. But I hear what you're saying. Thanks.

Lol yeah I get what you're saying. It is a little complicated. But basically, if you just set an amount of calories to eat a day and stay pretty close to those you'll be good. And if you go over, just workout a little extra that day. Like I love greasy burgers soooo, I just work my ass off those days lol :P

Haha. My favorite treat is the little $1 hot fudge sundaes at McDonalds. If I'm craving chocolate or something sweet all I need to do is eat half of one of those and it satisfies me.

I think BMI is so stupid. I really wouldn't see someone with 40-70lbs overweight as being obese. i found this a while ago, people say in the comments the diet works for them. https://www.fitmole.org/eating-one-meal-a-day-diet/

You're 40 to 70 pounds overweight, and you needed a calculator to tell you this? Didn't mirrors provide any clue? Weren't you at all suspicious when your feet disappeared from view in the shower?

No, actually. I'm surprised that it says that. I know I'm overweight but I still have a figure. It's rather shocking that the app says "YOU ARE OBESE. LOSE 39.7 TO 69.7 POUNDS."

Oh, c'mon now; lighten up! No, really.

I'm only kidding, as always. And, like I tell my wife, don't start ordering any crap you see on Dr. Oz to get the pounds off. I've created my own special diet program. It's called Eat Less; Weigh Less. Just start eating light meals, with no breads or sugar, and exercise for at least one hour a day. It'll take dome time to make it go away, but you'll be much happier and you'll live a lot ombré too.

      To keep it simple

Eat using the 'hunters and gatherers' method... google it.
Eat enough but make sure you are always a little hungry as a real of thumb
As long as you can but aim for 30-60 mins as you get more advanced

It's like, how the heck did this happen to me? I always had such a great figure. It was tough after I had kids but I did get my body back. Working full time again, stress, medication, going through a divorce, battling illness... all of that is just accumulating into a huge problem. Good luck to you. We can do this!
