BMI calculators.... WTF!

according to BMI calculators for a 16 year old I'm over weight but if I was 19 it would be perfectly fine how does three years matter? personally I know I am not overweight because I have a high percent of muscle but theses things make me feel like such sh*t!

BMI system is outdated and does not accomodate for build and muscle density. BMI is technically a method that really only applies to sedentary individuals. If I were to calculate mine, I am morbidly obese...

Here we go: 167cm (about 5'5.5") I weight about 84kg (about 187)...

Obese and have 15% bodyfat... Contradictory.

If you are not sedentary, I don't think you should wory about it.

BMI is bunk. Imo, the focus should be on body fat %. A healthy body fat % is a more accurate measure of overall health than BMI.

My body fat is 25%, which is above ideal, but not dangerously high, & my blood pressure is normal.

If I was going by male BMI, @ 5'10" & 310lbs, I'd be considered dangerously obese, & an ignorant doctor would rush me into cosmetic surgery lol.

Bmi is garbage. Based on your profile pic, you look normal. You got nothing to worry about. :)

bmi calculators leave room for error. like you pointed out, muscle weighs more than fat. go for a body fat % calculator, they'll give you a real idea of where you stand. if you go to your local gym and ask for one they should have one on hand to let you use.

Someone with 5% bodyfat could be considered obese, and someone with 40% bodyfat might not be considered obese. I would just ignore the BMI all together. A monkey could come up with something just as misleading and uninformative, its a nothing measurement

those aren't accurate as they are based on "average" and none of us are average anyways. I wouldn't pay attention to BMI calculations, but I'd pay attention how you look and how fit you are ( running around and walking up the stairs and such)... numbers don't really make a difference ...

It's the same thing for me, but opposite. I'm underweight for my age, but If I were a few years younger I'd be a healthy weight. It's silly. Don't worry about it. And don't let anyone else - including a stupid formula - tell you how you should feel about yourself. If you eat healthy, you're active and, most importantly, feel good, you're fine.

It's probably because you're muscular and the BMI is a straight calculation of weight vs height. Muscle is denser than fat, so it registers as heavier without taking into account fat percentage. I agree it's very stupid. The reason for the age is because a fully grown woman normally has a higher fat percentage than a teenage girl. As long as you are healthy and fit, feel energetic and eat healthy food, I wouldn't worry.

The BMI calculator is stupid and inaccurate. According to the BMI scale, my friend Don who is 195 lbs at 5'11" is almost obese. He's pretty thin and what weight he does have is muscle.

I don't pay a lot of attention to BMI. I mean for example take Johnny Wilkinson, who plays for the England Rugby team. No way is that guy fat or unfit, but his BMI says he's overweight!

Nah that's not very accurate. You need to go to a doctor to get the correct bmi. I'm supposed to be pretty overweight, but I have a lot of muscle so the calculator is skewed.

They're completely inaccurate. :| They seem to think that I'm overweight too, but just as you, I've got a high amount of muscle compared to many others.

all those measurements are stupid. no one can ever be so accurate or perfect.

just pay attention to being proportional and being comfortable and confident in your jeans! forget the numbers.
