Yes, that's right. That's what they do and they also examine the surface of the body for wounds and do chemical analyses of all sorts of things with the body or on the body (like clothes).

Full autopsies entail removal, weighing, and examination of all internal organs. Stomach contents are examined. Cavities are examined for signs of sexual activity and swabs are taken. Wound channels are examined. Blood and tissue samples are taken for toxicology testing. Any bullets or shrapnel are removed and placed into evidence.


They’re pretty gruesome. When we get them after a medical examiner gets done with them, they’re sewn back up with baseball stitches. Some examiners replace the organs, some give them to us in sealed heavy plastic bags.
