For most people, simple human contact and caring, is enough to stop the symptoms of anxiety… But for people with anxiety disorders, we need medication to stop the symptoms and end the nightmare we have to deal with! For me, my anxiety is caused by an inability of my body’s fight or flight response to STOP! Think of being in immediate life threatening danger? Let’s say it’s your first solo skydive, and as you pull the rip-cord, nothing happens! You try again… nothing! You go into “fight or flight mode.” In other words, your autonomic nervous system kicks in! Abdominal organs tightly constrict, limiting blood flow to organs such as your stomach and intestines… We may be about to die, we don’t need to digest food right now! Our nostrils flare, and we begin breathing even MORE! As extra oxygen rich blood goes to our muscles and brain, our ability to process information speeds up exponentially, (It’s why when remembering events, they appeared to slow down, b/c they were recorded at high speed, but our memories are played back at normal speed!) This is happening so you can process information quickly! But right now you’re free falling & there’s nowhere to run, so you have to fight to live! Suddenly you recall the training you thought you forgot, and eject the main parachute, you pull the back-up rip cord, your emergency chute opens, and you land safely on earth! In most people, fight or flight then shuts down and they go back to “normal” In people with anxiety disorders like mine, that “Signal“ to 🛑STOP🛑 the fight or flight, is never sent, and without medication it can feel like I’m falling to my death for several hours… It is seriously THAT BAD! Imagine leaning back on a stool, when you realize “too far” you’re falling backwards! You grab the bar and stop yourself! But that feeling you felt as you thought you were definitely falling? THAT is anxiety! Now imagine that feeling lasting for hours, while you feel you can’t breathe? THAT’s what a panic attack feels like… and it needs meds!
Since most anxiety that I experience comes from humans, I believe the human touch provides the greatest relief from anxiety.
Thanks for the MHO 😁
