Companies that only give you copies of the list of things they cover AFTER you sign up with them?

Does anybody else have these experiences, whether it's gym memberships, or other companies that provide services, whereby they don't give you a written list of the services offered in your plan until you buy it? The only way of knowing what is covered under your plan is to talk with the sales representative. How do these companies get away with that?

Bethany, unfortunately that is the point. They want to have someone walk through all of the selling points and upsell you where ever possible. What I do is tell them upfront give me everything I need to make an informed decision. That should include what is included in the base and any extras at a cost. Once I review that I will determine if I would Iike to move to the next step, but without that I am a non starter for you and you company. At least in the US they are bound by law UCC and there are a number of watch dog groups that drive the concept of truth in advertising. Just be firm up front...

It's a sales tactic.

Once you understand that you can listen with zero intent of buying unless what you specifically want is mentioned or you can start by asking the question.

Here in South Africa, Virgin Active gym membership is more than most people make in a month so anything that offers a substantial discount - over 40% - on one would interest me. But the only company that offers anything is the largest - note, not the best any more - medical aid company, Discovery. Their "Vitality" membership let's you get a discount off the gym membership. Not enough to make it worth it if your earnings are below the top 10% of the country, but it's something. Just not something that's worth it any more.

Remember in capitalism the goal is to force people to hand over more than they earn every month.

These companies do get away with failing to tell people what services they offer and that is why I do my homework before I make any choices to sign up with them this world is so form of scammers it's sad.

They get away with it because people let them. A smart consumer gets all teh available information BEFORE buying anything. Yes, I know it's a pain to read the 12-page contract, but if you don't, you could be missing out.

When it comes to solicitors the first thing I ask for is their ID and/or card. If they try to manipulate me I turn around and leave if their answer is not satisfactory and I'll tell them I'll call once I have all the terms and conditions

I've never had that experience because I would NEVER accept that. I don't believe it's legal anyway in the US.
