+1 yI know some. I know CPR, though that changes often, so it's important to get recertified when new classes are offered. My ex girlfriend's mother once stopped breathing and later went into cardiac arrest, and I did CPR on her for almost 10 minutes before she started breathing again. When the paramedics too her, that's when she went into cardiac arrest, so I doubt I helped much.
When she found out I gave her mouth to mouth, she told everyone I was getting fresh with her and was responsible for the bruise on her chest. (People can bruise from CPR), though she never showed me a bruise when I confronted her. I am a walking ad for 'Need good deed goes unpunished'!
Most of the training I got was from my time as a lifeguard. When I was little I almost drowned and over time I became a good swimmer when I had to learn.
Since I live in a drug infested area with drug addicts, I also know how to use Narcan, which you're supposed to be trained on using that also, since a person can overdose on it. (Always start in the right nostril, so when the paramedics arrive, you can tell them where you started, and after administering the first dose, you should wait at least 5 minutes before administering the 2nd, unless the directions say otherwise). Yeah, I've had to use to twice on people since I moved to this town.
I think everyone should be required to learn first aid, especially in areas like mine.

Mainly cuts and scrapes, but the more serious stuff, a lot of seizures including a newborn, lot of heatstroke cases, anaphylaxis, concussion, diabetic issues, kids trapped in hot cars, extractions, people passing out, etc. Even though we were trained to use defibrillators of which we had 1 per floor, no one managed to have a heart attack and also amazingly no one ever went into labor. Lucky though because our building was about 2 blocks from the nearest hospital with an ER so we didn't ever have too long to wait between starting first aid in the more serious cases and EMT arrival.

I font know much about first aid, but I was working on one of my plastic models and the x acto knife slipped and it made a deep cut below and to the inside of my left thumb and blood droplets went on the fake hardwood floor and some flew on the walls. I ran to the sink and turned on the water and washed out the wound and the blood flowed. I found out my 11 year old son is also my guardian angel. Once he heard me yell schit! son of a (female dog). He knew something was wrong. He said daddy you ok? I said no I cut myself bad! Get me a waterproof bandage quick! He did and I quickly applied it and for the time being I was ok. He saw what happened and just went eww. Now if my wife had to have helped me she would have been on the floor passed out because she can only stand the sight of her own blood. This happened on Sunday so all urgent care places were closed. We went to my mother’s house and let her see if I screwed up or if I did well or if there was anything more she could do. (She used to be a nurse). She put on extra bandage with gauze and we stayed the night there. I called urgent care centers on Monday but because of that juneteenth all urgent care places shut down. So my son and I returned home and luck was with me because an urgent care was open that day. Went in and they put on adhesive what I call liquid stitches on. I also got a tetanus shot as a precaution. So far so good. 🙂👍

+1 yyep, it all depends on the equipment as well, i can also improvise, you can use shirts and sleeves as rags or rope, to either cut circulation to slow down the bleeding process or to cover the wound, if you dont have rubbing alcohol to disinfect the wound your next best choice is drinking alcohol which i doubt it works too well but its better than nothing, if its an artery the first thing you gotta do is cut the circulation cause someone can bleed out in 5 minutes from the artery i can't do surgeries but i know i can also do stitching and tbh on myself if hospital isn't an option if try removing a bullet with a pair of scissors but thats already on the risky side and not recommended, something i do love about first aid kits tho is that they have that blood clotting spray that thickens the blood and it eventually clots, some of that on a rag would do wonders, after spraying the wound with it at first after disinfecting, i should keep a first aid in my car no lie

+1 yNot first aid, but I'm BLS and a BLS Instructor (basic life support).
No, it's not the same as First Aid: first aid is geared more towards emergency situations, such as: cuts, fractures, choking.
BLS, or CPR, is compressions and rescue breathing, usually when you're having a heart attack or pass out.21 Reply - 411 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic.
+1 yI can do a field tracheotomy, standard stitches and reinflate a collapsed lung if you want it to still be pretty afterwards. I can do a lot more if you don't care how pretty it looks afterwards like take out shrapnel/bullet from non-thoracic soft tissue. I've reset broken bones and noses before. Think that's the most of it.

Well and I've done a bunch of IVs, if that counts.

No I just had a very interesting employment by the government where those skillsets were needed from time to time.
- +1 y
Were you a combat medic?
- +1 y
@Guardian45 Nope... my end was a little less "do no harm"
I've had a lot of Medical training, so I'm pretty comfortable doing CPR, using a Defibrillator, knowing signs of Stroke or Heart Attack and how to handle those situations, and I'm not uncomfortable seeing blood and working to stop bleeding. So I'm confident in a bad situation I could do whatever needed to be done.

+1 yyes that is the reason i studied it, but i will never use it on someone i do not know very well , because statistically i will probably be saving a harmful person, or even the next hitler. call an ambulance instead. hopefully it won't get their in time.
10 Reply 1.9K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. Yeap. First-aid, CPR and AED certified through my work. I can, and I will, if I know you.

Yeap. I have 0 duty of care to anyone else. I will do everything possible to save a loved one, but that's it most likely. But I will never do mouth to mouth on a stranger. I'm not getting herpes or mono trying to help someone I don't even care about, and permanently fuck up my life and health. Screw that.
+1 yI don’t remember much about first aid anymore.
I used to take a first aid class with my dad when I was a kid but that’s a long time ago now.
I still have a bit of memory of the fundamentals but nothing solid.10 ReplyA few years ago, I learned CPR and got certified, but I think my certification is expired.
11 Reply560 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. Yes, very well.
It's a job I have been doing for a long time.
Just because of what I do I'm exposed to it very often.
Everyone should know basic CPR.
You don't even have to worry about the breathing part, just pump the chest.10 Reply
+1 yYes, I'm a retired paramedic. I have already saved lives, even when I was not on duty. I did the Heimlich maneuver on a friend. Twenty five years later, I met him for dinner and he thanked me again. I had forgotten about it.😳😂
40 Reply4.8K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I took first aid and senior lifesaving in college. I never had to use it and actually I took the course before CPR was even invented.
40 ReplyWhen I kept my certification up-to-date, I used to be a certified lifeguard for a period of time in my life.
20 ReplyMy certification has lapsed but yes I could keep them alive and stable until first responders could arrive.

+1 yYes, I do, and have saved several lives... but in that moment, 97 percent of it wasn't because of first aid. It was because of being in the life and death moment so many times it's just another day to me, thus, not hesitating.

+1 yYes I know basic first aid and cpr. I've hurt myself enough to know how to fix it. Duct tape and super glue works wonders.

I've heard that too!😂
- +1 y
Super glue is very similar to what the doctors use. If I don't have any I use pvc glue.
Have done a first aid course but that was a long time ago. I would know enough to stop bleeding or choking.
10 ReplyI learned finstead aid in boys scouts. It helped me save my life. And give the heimlich maneuver to a classmate in college.
