The overwhelming opinion of GaG members is that this will have little or no effect on people smoking. I tend to agree with that assessment.

I wonder if this might help the cigarette manufacturers avoid future lawsuits... the smokers are definitely warned about the harms of smoking.

It's wise. They are attempting to use Auto Suggestion. For the new user that can be very effective. Many people say: "But they already know it's bad"
That's not the point of the label, they aren't trying to educate you...
Think about it... You know how to do better in your life but you aren't doing it right?
Lack of Knowledge isn't the issue.

They are attempting to create a subconscious impression on the minds of users.
For new users, that can be very effective IF the user accepts the suggestion.
If they reject the suggestion it will do nothing.

Will power isn't what controls behavior long term. If you're pushing you're not using your mind right. The impressions made on your subconscious is what is controlling you! If such impressions are made often enough they are called beliefs or habits.

So this can all be very effective however for the long time cig user it probably will not lead to them quitting unless they understand how to use their mind properly. From what I've seen you don't learn about it anywhere. Sadly, it seems, most people don't even understand discipline. Discipline is just controlling the impressions made on your subconscious. Discipline is not using will power to control your actions.

That's the whole reason why people cannot stop. Every time they smoke they are making an impression that aids the behavior and sadly they are making zero impressions that aid the opposite of the behavior. The dominant side is gonna win.
There are many reasons not to smoke but people aren't using those reasons. They are keeping all that knowledge in their conscious mind. Smoking is literally life or death but if your subconscious doesn't understand that it will do you no good knowing that. The subconscious's language is not English or Spanish. It needs a translator and the only known one is emotion. As soon as it understands it begins to work on it but this has to be done often and frequently for it to replace the opposing habit. And with substance abuse who knows what else you're dealing with. Withdrawals and stuff.

People don't worry about consequences 20 years down the road and tend to think its something that only affects other people. A quick look at the stats shows me 17% in Canada smoke (19% UK, 25% USA ) and my personal observation is most of them are older people who don't like being told what to do.

With such a low percentage of people smoking I think a simple ban on sales would be better.

Thank you for your kind response, but I’ll have no pity on myself. I knew the risks and still chose to smoke. I was warned many, many times in many many, ways. There are consequences for poor decision making. Now I must bear mine.

However, I’m very fortunate the cancer I have (bladder cancer) is highly treatable and the doctor said this one won’t kill me.

All that said, your first 2 sentences were exactly how I thought when I started smoking around age 18. I figured very stupidly it might happen to others but won't happen to me, and that I’m young. That it would take years of smoking before negative effects. Wrong on both counts.

I quit smoking last year. Too late to avoid consequences. I ought to have been prudent in the first place. So, I refuse to feel sorry for myself. I knew the risks and ignored them in stupidity. I put myself in this boat.

As a former smoker myself, it's a waste of money. Every smoker already knows the end game. I was informed countless times as a child and as a teen about the dangers of it. Didn't stop me smoking. Even over the next 25 years with every variety of annoying ad, friends, family, coworkers, doctors, random strangers, Hollywood guilt trips, taxes and every non smoking law passed along the way I STILL kept smoking. Only billions of dollars later would I quit, but not for any listed reason they repeatedly gave me.

No matter the warning, the guilt or the law people need their own reason to quit.

More lables aren't going to make people more informed, they already know it's bad.

Gathering information isn't what controls behavior. If a person is smoking but never thinking about the info they already know it does nothing for them. However! if that person concentrates on reasons why not to do it and GETS EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED with the clear reasons, that surely will stop the one with weak enough wiring. Even if a person has strong wiring it would work but probably would have to be sustained longer. It's the subconscious driving behavior. You don't gather knowledge like smart people do and think that will control your behavior. The subconscious mind works by the language of emotion. That is the only way to get a message to it.

I smoke, the reason why I smoke is a hard to understand. My dad smoked until he was 85 and never had a problem. One of my sisters and one of my brothers never smoked and they died of heart problems at the age of 67 and 65. My dad never smoked inside. Plus when my sister and brother married (18) both spouses never smoked and their homes were smoke free. Yes I should quit cost is to high.

That's a horrible idea. The reason most people live a crap life is because they never have mentors. The word adult means nothing. A certain age doesn't make one ready for life.
