If AGE were just NUMBER, it would look like this... 42 ... which we all know is the answer to everything.

It can be a specific number indicating the length of time something has been in existence.

It can be a work to provide a general indication of the maturity of. a particular person, place or thing.

It can be a suffix indicating the "act, process, function, condition" of the word to which it is added, such as cover-age, or cleav-age. (That last one is obviously a geological term. ;- ). )
