I used to have a lot of trouble because I stressed about getting sleep. A few things helped

    1. Going to bed with the objective of resting not sleeping as per NathanDavis. I started doing this earlier than I would have to go to sleep.

    2. Sleeping headband speakers with blue tooth connectivity to my phone

    2a can play relaxation music

2b Binaural beats. The theory is this can put your brain into sleep frequencies

    2c ASMR sounds

All of these had some immediate benefits but lost effectiveness fairly quickly

2d History podcasts Something Else podcasts

This has had enduring benefit. Something that will be interesting to me but not exciting. It engages enough of my attention to drive out other thoughts but is not exciting enough to keep me awake. In any case it enables me to feel that lying bed is not a waste. It is part of my days entertainment regime

If I don't sleep I am resting anyway so I don't stress about sleeping so much. So I fall asleep.

History worked for me but you have to find some thing for you that is interesting but not exciting.

I used to when I was younger and prone to overthink when idle. My mind starts racing with thoughts which made it difficult to relax and sleep. I even used to rely on drinking a shot of whiskey or two before bed to help me sleep since it would slow down my mind.

It wasn't just sleeping that I found difficult. I found a lot of activities so incredibly boring and start to become extremely restless, like when my friends just wanted to sunbathe at a beach or swimming pool or go fishing. I was in disbelief when I tried fishing with my friends:

Me: Wait, we're just supposed to sit here and wait for fish to bite?
    Friends: Yep.
Me: WTF! This is the most boring thing ever! Let's do something else! How about going swimming in this lake? We can race each other!
Friends: This is fun. You just need to chill and relax.
Me: Ugh. [Start chugging all the beers].

I tend to relax doing very strenuous or thrilling activities. It requires my mind to focus on just that one thing and relaxes me, like doing sprint intervals or bungee jumping.

I have found though that once I started studying about Stoicism and how to reframe our thoughts (also later Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), I still have a very active mind but my thoughts tend to be extremely mellow. I don't get agitated or restless by my hyper-active mind, and started to find it increasingly easier to sleep the better I became at reframing my thoughts and finding my "inner chill" (aka "inner calm" or "inner peace").

So I recommend studying about Stoicism and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy if you're like me. It's one of the best things I ever found not just for sleeping but just being much more mellow and relaxed in every aspect of my daily life.

The other way I found before I started getting better at reframing my thoughts is to do some sprint intervals before bed. I found it helpful for sleeping to do very intense physical activity late at night.

That does result in an accelerated heart rate which might be counter-productive for some people but for a hyper-active thinker, the thinking can be more disruptive to our sleep than the heart rate. So reaching lung-exploding levels and getting thoroughly physically exhausted shortly before I went to sleep was another technique I used to find helpful.

If you're drinking caffeine try to ween yourself off or to like one normal sized cup w day. I had a friend that drank two 24 oz cups of black coffee a day and I had to explain how that isn't 2 cups.

If you're already doing that and you don't want meds, which I don't blame you, try taking magnesium at night. I've found the brand new chapter has magnesium glycinate with ashagwandah and it helps be relax and fall asleep. Plus here is many people are magnesium deficient so it's good to have anyway. I take it an hour before bed.

I have a potential solution for you. You could try watching me engage in my everyday activities! I eat plain pasta, organize my sock drawer, and play Scrabble on my Nintendo Gameboy c. 1992 at regular intervals. I'm also fond of standing in lines for no reason and watching water boil. Or, I could flaccidly balance my budget while you watch.

Yes and no. It depends on how I finish the day. If I had enough steps (work, sports, chores…) and go to bed early (~22.00) then I sleep perfectly fine and wake up refreshed.
If I roll around on the sofa all day, watching movies and surfing the net, then missing the 22.00 o‘ clock window, I probably won’t fall asleep until 3 in the morning, making me dead tired when I have to get up again.

I used to be... years ago

basically I did quit on sleep, I never went to bed again thinking of sleep, I only focused on rest, getting some rest...

I would not move, not say anything, no complaints, no frustration... just relax, and rest... think of nothing much or just think of one thing over and over...

keep any activity physical or mental to a minimum... and then I would not notice when I would be finally asleep, at least for some couple of hours at first, lol

You should masturbate if/when you can't fall asleep, and edge yourself because a prolonged and beautifully pleasurable orgasm will relax both your mind & body and you should, hopefully, drift off to sleep shortly afterwards.

It certainly works for me ! It's with a try don't you think?

I did, but here's what helped: I cut out added sugars from my diet completely. It was tough around Christmas, but I did it. I take magnesium supplements a half an hour before bed.

    No caffiene after 5 pm

I do not read or watch TV in bed. I want my body to associate bed with sleep,

    I bought an eye massager.

    Regular exercise.

Now I have a much easier time falling asleep

I do some nights I can only fall asleep at like 3 or 4 am. I usually listen to soft music or look at my phone and text people til I get tired. Or I rub myself but I don’t do it all the way bc it gets really messy ifykyk lol. I would try to relax like take a hot bath or shower before you sleep that could do the trick. What do you usually do when you can’t fall asleep?

I finally fixed my sleep schedule so not anymore luckily. But in my case it was my last case of corona that made me so sleepy at the end of the recovery that it allowed me to fix it. I don't really have tips as a result.

I found meds helped for a while but the painful joints they caused wasn't worth it when they stopped being as effective.

I have found a weighted blanket helps but for the most part I still only get a few hours sleep each night and can't fall asleep easily.

Stimulate your mind enough before bedtime or something physical. Read a book/listen to a podcast and working out beforehand is what works for me. Also cannabis helps for me too 😆 😅

No, but I know some people that do , and the main cause of it is anxiety , you are best to go see your doctor and see what kind of meds they can put you on to help you sleep better

Proper medication will help you a lot. Any therapeutic exercise which calms your mind will help you.

Before doing that, watch Fight Club (1999); Dir. David Fincher.
