My male friend and crush is an alcoholic he says he has a lot going on and doesn’t want it affecting me

and doesn't want to hurt me / bring me into his bs and we both like each other mutually.

what do I do

for this specific situation as a guy what do you mean when you say this are you protecting the girl/ female friend.

Listen to him. He's giving you good, honest advice. Being in a relationship with an addict is a bad idea. The substance, whatever it is, will always be more important to him than anything else. If you try to help an addict, they will always find a way to make it your fault they failed. When he has a 2 year AA chip maybe, not until.
