My dog of 14 years had a severe kidney failure and blood infection. He was in pain and I decided to put him down. how to forgive myself?

That is the hardest decision you have to make, but it is the most unselfish thing you can do.
It is the final act of love you can do for them for all of the love they gave you.
Most people go through this gut wrenching decision and feel the same.
Your heart was in the right place.
It wasn't like you took fluffy in because you were tired of him/her.
It was because you loved them and couldn't bare to see them suffer any longer.
You know when it is time.
I had to do that to two cats in 1 week.
I was a wreck.

It truly sucks when this happens, I'm always heartbroken when it comes to losing a pet and know where you are coming from.

You did the right thing and I am sure your dog forgives you. Allowing a pet to go through life in pain just so we can have them around is selfish, euthanizing them shows you truly care about them when it comes time. Dwell on how happy they made you and how happy you made them.

My own two dog mates are only 3 years old. But I sadly look out for the day when I may need to face the same 'decision'.

There is no need to forgive you - what you did was out of love. No one (you and me included) lives forever. Until the sad moment of departure, we share affection, care and ''love''. That's what counts.

I gave him kisses and thanked him for everything. I could not leave him dying. During his last days , I cuddled with him, telling him how much I love him and that he now can be free from his pain. He was hardly walking, could not poop or pee properly, did not eat for days, also very much depressed. I could not leave him to suffer like this cause with all my love I wanted for him to die without pain but knowing I loved him. I don't have driving license so I did my best and found someone to drive us to say goodbey to my little friend.

I adore dogs and I can feel a lump in my throat just reading that, but there is nothing to forgive. You did what you had to do to stop the poor thing from suffering any further.

I know the pain you're feeling only too well. For those of us who love our pets, it's one of the hardest decisions we will ever have to make.

If he was in pain I think maybe it was the most humane way to handle the situation, just how someone can claim it's the wrong thing, I can't recall any lifeform that wants to live in pain and I think keeping it alive knowing it will suffer can be the selfish choice depending on how you look at it.

Forgive yourself for what? You made the right choice. Of course it hurts, but it hurts you, not him. You took his pain unto yourself. Do you regret that choice?

I went through the same thing with a cat once. Same timespan too. My brother, in essence, as we were the same age, more or less... except 14 was young for me, and old for him. His liver was failing and he was in constant pain... so I had to give the vet the go-ahead to euthanise him. It was my 14th birthday.
I still remember telling my mother the next morning that I was never doing birthdays ever again... and I never did.
I've pretty much just been waiting to catch up with him ever since.

You do not need to. He was in pain and was not going to live so what you did was an act of kindness. 14 years is a good age for a dog. Our family dog was that age when he had to be put down and it was also kidney failure.
