Do you think 14 years old is too late for basketball?

Hello, I am 14 years old and I want to start playing basketball. I just got excited. Some say it's too late. Do you think it's too late?

There’s a number of professional NBA players who didn’t start till high school. It’s just a matter of how disciplined, dedicated you are. I’ve always loved teaching basketball skills to my nephews, some of my nieces as well who were interested, even friends who had kids that wanted to learn. A lot of kids start when they’re very young. My son started when he was 4. So considering that you may be a little behind in years practiced, you’ll have to put in more time than everyone else to get up to their level for your age. I don’t mean 6 hours a day, maybe 1.5 hours as opposed to an hour. When my daughter played we’d practice for 2-3 hours a day. That’s cause she wanted to. But too practice isn’t just about physically doing it. That includes watching videos on defense, offense, etc. Do you have someone who can help you practice? There’s a lot of YouTube videos online to learn some drills. I always liked watching Ganon Baker, plus Michael Jordan. There’s a lot you can do. Even lying in bed you can practice shooting by perfecting your spinning rotation. Lay on your back, act as if you’re shooting trying to get a nice rotation on the ball as you flick it up in the air. Hopefully the ball comes fight back down to your hand w out you having to move your hand to catch the ball once it comes down. Dribbling a tennis ball helps. Dribbling a ball while someone tosses you tennis balls helps a lot. Also I’ve always liked dribbling on grass or dirty, an uneven surface that forces you to react quick. There’s a lot of things you can do.

My honest opinion is when you're a kid, you soak in the type of coordination meant for the sport much more easily. 14 is definitely a bit late to start in my opinion. This is coming from a guy who uses to play at a semi professional level in soccer. I was naturally coordinated and able to pick up movements much easier than others, but once I got around 18 years old, my coordination started to lock in and it became a bit harder to learn new movements.

It's still possible, but you need a shit ton of talent and hard work to catch up with others at this point.

THEN at 18 i thought that i should've started it at 14 and that's it's too late now. almost 4 years later i feel that same way now with my age, so it's never too late lol it's just a mental loop of insecurity

Is never too late. Especially if you're really excited and passionate about it. If you keep practicing even during off season, you'll catch right up. I started my freshman year and got moved up to varsity for my sophomore year. So it's definitely possible. Go for it, you might regret it if you don't.

That's the perfect age to start. You should be able to catch up with others in about a year - that's what their lifetime of practice has bought them: a one year head start.

But, you have to actually practice. Every day. All the fundamentals.

Never too late. I played varsity volleyball in high-school and I only started playing in 11th grade just to have something extra in my transcript. Go do it!

It's never too late to start something you want to do. There may be other kids your age with more experience, and you might have to practice more, but have fun... and enjoy it.

Absolutely not, but what are your goals? Just to have fun playing the sport, or are you aiming for a scholarship?

No, not for a school team. Tryouts are usually in August/September at most schools. Go check it out and ask for the tryout schedule. Good luck, kiddo!

Do you mean you want to learn to take it up professionally, or as a hobby? A pro career may be out of reach, but as a hobby no 14 isn't too old!

It's never too late to start sports, however, you're more likely to not make teams, the older you are, just because you're starting to slow down etc..

Why would it be too late? You're not even old yet. Maybe if you want to be a professional player it might be too late, but other than that it doesn't matter.
