One time fee or recurring monthly fee? What is your preference?

I'm referring to online memberships where you'd have to choose between paying every month to have access to content on a platform and paying the once for one product for sale on said platform. What would you prefer and why?

I don't have any membership on any platforms because it is easy to lose control of your funds and how you spend that money.

However and provided that the monthly fee is not higher than the yearly subscription fee, I would prefer to go for the monthly subscription fee. If you don't like the content but you subscribed for that content for a whole year, you are basically wasting money because you are not likely to make full use of it.

With a monthly subscription fee, you can cancel when you are no longer interested in the content and you save money.

If the one time fee is doable in my personal budget, then I’ll do this options, so I don’t have to be minding an extra thing/expense every monthly cycle. 🔁

But if one time sum is a bit hefty, and the monthly price is literally like a single dollar 💵, then I’ll just take the monthly payment because that just makes the most cents! lol 🪙

When I feel confident with the subscription I will take the most cost effective option , there is usually discount for paying yearly … lifetime subscription wins hands down obviously but they can’t or don’t always exist.. very much depends on area of interest.


For those where I’m dipping my toe in the water to check it out I will do so a month here and but the only media / content streaming service I pay for monthly and claim back through my work is that through Apple - TV , Music , storage , Fitness etc

one of the very few things I pay for online... would be Netflix

and I get the monthly subscription card, whenever I actually want to watch something airing on Netflix... few years ago, I got a yearly subscription but that was when it had a lot more for me to actually watch

nowadays... not so much

Well if the one time fee the sum of all monthly fees for the upcoming 3 years then no thanks
I’ll take monthly and give myself the option to end the subscription when needed


But for many things I prefer one time fees
Such as movies and video games and things like that
I grew up buying these things on CDs and the idea of paying a subscription for a product I’m buying seems wrong for me

It depends.

If I'm going to use the product a lot for a long time, one-time fee is preferred. Otherwise, paying each month is better, usually cheaper unless I get carried away and use it for a long time.

I prefer paying a one-time fee for software apps, since I tend to use them a lot over a longer time, and monthly fees for streaming services, which I may stop using after a while.

it depends... there are services I use only from time to time, so monthly subscription is definitely better...

but I bought a lifetime access to a few services I've used for years and for sure will use in the future

Almost always, I get the lifetime subscription. If you use the service or platform all the time, it's always the cheaper option. The only time I don't is when they don't have an option for it or I can't afford it.

You normally get a small discount if you pay per year. It doesn't make that much difference anyway. With 2 or 3 memberships and amounts that are reasonable, either way is fine.
