My new boyfriend offered to take me clothes shopping when I hit my weight goal. Why?

He first just asked me if he could take me clothes shopping and I said maybe. Then he added the part of it would be fun once I hit my target weight goal - I have 12 lbs to lose. Just really devastated me. Like - I'll buy you a present - once you earn it. I don't get it...seriously offended. Should I be? I got very upset and he said he didn't mean it like that - I am perfect to him and he loves me the way I am. So why the bribe with clothes?

Thank you all for your answers - so helpful. I know I am being way oversensitive to the issue and cannot see it rantionally. It is a very long-seeded painful one for me - years of obesity. That is why I came here to ask for comments.

I am now down to a size 8 and close to my goal. He did not know my past and we talked about it last night. When he heard about issues with men and my parents from growing up - he realized how and why his offer hit such a raw nerve. Trying to work through it.

Ceri720, I think you're just being really, extremely sensitive here. I think he said that to help motivate you to lose weight. I don't think he meant it in a bad way, I think he suggested it to give you even more of a reason to strive to lose that weight. You're over thinking and you need to relax and not make an issue out of nothing. It's a thoughtful gesture of him :)

What would be the point of him buying you clothes now while you're still trying to lose weight? He'd just be wasting his money if you plan on losing the weight.

I think you are seriously overthinking it and also taking it the wrong way. There is nothing to be offended or hurt about in my opinion and I actually feel a bit bad for your boyfriend/

He is trying to be supportive in your weight loss process. You didn't say that he was the one who told you to lose 12 lbs so you must be the one who set that goal for yourself, right? So he was just trying to give you some extra motivation to help you try to reach the goal that you yourself set.

I think he is just trying to be helpful and motivate you. Otherwise he would just break up with you. I can't see a guy being together with a girl he doesn't feel attracted to unless he has some serious issues with his confidence.
