Squats and lunges = bigger calves?

So I have always been a bit confused about this and would reallly appreciate some help from you guys.

I want to tone my thighs so I started doing squats and lunges as I heard they are really good for it. However, I have imo big calves (blame my mum!), I don't want them to get bigger. Would these squats and lunges do this?
