I want to tone my thighs so I started doing squats and lunges as I heard they are really good for it. However, I have imo big calves (blame my mum!), I don't want them to get bigger. Would these squats and lunges do this?
Many many thanks!
Assuming you're doing them with proper form they don't do much for the calves. The only time calves are activated is when you put your weight on your toes or the balls of your feet. With squats and lunges the weight is on your heels if you're doing them properly.
The last thing you need to worry about is calves when doing squats and lunges unless your doing them on your toes lol. Squats and lunges are predominantly focused on the quadriceps and a bit of ass involved as well but no calves so you're fine!
They won't get a lot bigger, but they will get stronger. Keep in mind that you don't have the amount of testosterone required to bulk up.

Like a few of the other guys mentioned just make sure you have proper form and you will be fine. For lunges keep the knee and hip in line for the back leg and the knee over your ankle for the front leg... oh hell YouTube it, it will be easier.
Bigger calves on a girl are a good thing.
What would you think if a guy with big strong arms wanted to shrink them? That would be counterproductive to what makes him attractive.
No, your genes won't allow those exercises to shrink your calves.
Any compound leg excercise will probably result in your calves getting bigger :S
Squats mainly focus on quads, glutes and hammies though so you shouldn't get HUGE calves doing Olympic style squats.
Good luck.
No of course not unless your raising your heels during these exercises.
Barbell or bodyweight squats. Barbell you may notice some growth. Bodyweight I doubt they will get bigger unless you are insanely weak
No, calf raises equals bigger calves.
