Yay it went well! Quite quick. Only thing that is uncomfortable is not knowing if I'm swallowing properly since my mouth is numb and being able to feel coolness in my mouth is kinda making me want to chuck. How long do I keep the gauze in or how long is too long? Feeling my chin is funny, quite entertaining.. it's all warm and really soft *poke poke*

My wisdom teeth are way underdeveloped for my age so they're still in BUT I happen to work in an Oral Surgery Clinic so here's what I see with my patients on average

1) We always use IV sedation. It might be pricey, but it's worth it to keep you comfortable. On the rare occasion that we don't use sedation, we use 4 carpules of lidocaine which lasts approx 2-4 hours after surgery, and 2 carpules of marcaine which lasts about 4-6 hours. Anesthetic can only numb sharp pain caused from making incisions, and reflecting tissue, it does not remove the sensation of pressure, which can at times considered painful/uncomfortable to the patient. If you have the IV sedation, you should not be bothered by pressure during surgery

2) After surgery you should be prescribed a narcotic (we use percocet in our clinic) and every Oral Surgeon I've met also gives out 800mg Ibuprofen. Take them as prescribed. Eat every time you take the medications to prevent nausea. You'll be sore, but if you stay on your pain meds it shouldn't be anything unbearable. Most patients seem to rate the healing process around a 5-6. A lot of it will depend on how difficult your teeth are to extract. Severely impacted (under bone), or malposed (teeth growing in sideways) take longer to heal than teeth that come in straight. Also uppers are easier to extract, and heal much more quickly. Lowers are the ones that suck.

3) It takes about 7 days to feel well enough to go back to your regular routines. Exercise, heavy lifting and strenuous activity might take a little longer. The extraction site heals from the bottom up so you might feel like you have holes back there for a while.

4)to your update: keep the gauze in 30-40 minutes, eat, take meds, then get some rest! Numbness is normal lol If you have any questions later feel free to shoot me a message!

What can I use if I run out of gauze? I only have two left so I don't want to take this one out yet just incase. I'm sure an hour has passed though, is it important to start the meds asap? Or should I leave the gauze in longer just to be sure? Once I take it off it should have STOPPED bleeding already right? If not do I just swallow my meds and drink stuff anyway and not worry about it and then pop the gauze back after? I can only rinse my mouth after 24 hours right? Kinda wonder if I can swallo

W my meds since I can't feel my mouth and tongue properly xD.. or even my ears for that matter.. aeg the cold is so annoying. I had local anesthesia so yeah this numbness is annoying! Thanks for helping me out. :)

you can take tea bags, get them a little damp, and bite on them when you run out of gauze. It's normal to have a light pink tinge to your saliva for the next few days, but if you notice any heavy bleeding, apply pressure using the tea bags for a constant 45 min and if it slows down your good. Yeah take your meds with some sort of food ASAP- you don't want to play catch-up when the numbness wears off. As for food, you can have anything from milkshakes through sandwiches! Whatever you can handle.

Also don't drink from straws, swish, or spit vigerously for the next 3 days- it can disrupt the healing process and cause a dry socket- which is super painful! (treatable, but sucks)

Well, I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out at once. No, I didn't really feel anything,

my face was numbed and they gave something else as well, so I was kind of in la la land I felt

nothing, it went by pretty fast too! Well, after they wrote me a prescription for a coulpe

of things to help with the pain and I was kind of sore and could only have liquids that

day. Um, it was pretty long time ago, but maybe a 7 or 8, I have a pretty high tolerence

for pain. Recovery was maybe, about a week I think and then the following one I

had to go back and get the stiches taken out.

I hope that helped, it was quite a a while ago that I had this done. But, I hope this

I've never heard about stitches being put in.. I kinda thought they just cut (if needed) and yank it out.. lol now everything is much more worrying. I'm probably just getting the anesthetic via needle (argh) and I know I'll be able to feel pressure and that I'm not supposed to feel anything else but with one they are cutting bone...

I did feel a little pressure and they were disolvble stitches. So they took the ones that were left

and didnt' disolve. Sorry, that with one there cutting bone! : ( Good Luck and best wishes! : )

I had all four taken out at once. I was given a general anesthetic so in theory I wasn't supposed to feel anything. However, I have memories of drifting in and out of consciousness and feeling a pulling sensation in my mouth, so the anesthetic didn't work perfectly. My mouth was numbed so it didn't really hurt all that much, just a little bit of a freaky experience. My recovery was pretty quick. Spent the first day replacing the cotton in my mouth to absorb the blood. I'd say the soreness was about a 5. Didn't eat solids for 24 hours. After that things were pretty normal aside from some minor soreness. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Yes. I could hear them talking faintly and it was a bit like when you are having a dream and are just about to wake up.

I got 3 of them taken out all at once.

It was so painful. Omg I can still remember how it felt as they broke and pulled out the pieces of teeth. The local anesthesia didn't even work. They had to keep putting it over and over because I still felt it.

When I left, I kept bleeding and I had to put that gauze in the hole where my teeth were and I might have swallowed a lot of blood because when I took the vicodin, I threw up. And I cried because I guess the stomach acids burned the wound. And my cheeks were swollen for a few days. But I still felt gross because I could feel the hole with my tongue. I did that 3 years ago so I'm healed now. It took about a month for the holes to close. :D I guess I give the whole experience an 8. I'm sure a major surgery feels worse.

When I had my wisdom teeth taken out they did all of them in one go. Couldn't feel anything cause they knocked me out with laughing gas during the procedure. Afterward I just felt groggy and a teeny bit high. They gave me a bottle of vicodine for the pain but I didn't really need it myself. I only took a half of a pill once and I was fine. My mouth was a little sore, but not so much that I couldn't go back to eating semi-solid foods after a week, and after a few weeks to a month I was pretty much fine. Of course it will vary person by person. Most other people I talked to have said they had more pain afterward than I did but that it took about the same time to heal.

I don't think so, but I'm not really sure. I think its just more of a general comfort thing, and its apparently much more common in the US than it is anywhere else.

I didn't find it painful at all. Worst part for me was finding a vein to put in the sleepy medicine they gave me. I had them knock me out. I had all four pulled at once. When I was done I asked for a Jamba Juice. Then about two hours later I asked for mashed potatoes! My friend who was a dental assistant came over and said I was doing really really well for just having it done a few hours before.

umm you get all of them taken out at once. You will be sore for about a week and the stitches will dissolve in your mouth. I could not compare the pain because I also had my tonsils and adnoids removed in the same surgery but from my sister who had all 4 removed, she was up and out of the house after 2-3 days but no drinking from a straw for a week so it's not bad.

I got all four of mine taken out at once. Afterwards, I was tired and in pain. The pain for me was probably a 7 the first two days and then a 4-5 the rest of that week. Took me about a week to recover.
