What are his chances of survival?

My grandfather was recently diagnosed with colon and liver cancer. He's 79 years old. He had a surgery to remove the part of his colon that had the cancer, but apparently 95 percent of his liver has cancer. What are his chances of beating this?

I'm EXTREMELY glad to report that we got some good news last week :) He went to the oncologist and apparently its only 20 percent of his liver with cancer. Whichever dumb ass told him differently sucks! Haha thank you all for the advice, and if you could respond to the update I'd greatly appreciate it :)

Cancer goes like this: Tumour, Node, Metatases. He's reached the stage where it's metatasised from its origin... It's hit his lymph system so has the ability to infect other pelvic organs. 95% is alot... Tbh I doubt they'd remove the cancer from his liver, even though the 5% can grow new hepatic tissue and there's the option of transplant (however his age could contraindicate such surgery) Basically... I'm sorry but I reckon he'll be looking at end of life care, ie either chemo/radiotherapy or letting nature take it's course. It'll probably be his option, but all the chemo/r.t will really do is postpone it and give him more time. Spend time with him while you can.

It's probably better to ask his oncologist. It will depend on his overall health, if he has any present medical conditions, like diabetes, how aggressive the cancer is, the stages of cancers he has etc. It sounds like they are going to section his colon. The bigger question is the liver. They may go full chemo since it's contained so much in there. It's very hard to say without all the facts.

if it's already spread that much then his chances

are slim, though not exactly zero, but don't expect

a good outcome, try to help him slow down his

cell proliferation(though that's difficult since he's old)

to give him more time.

I feel for ya. Only the medical professionals can really answer you. If is any consolation at least he is your grandfather and has had a life to 79. I lost both my parents to cancer and complications much younger. I know that does make you feel better but he has had a long life.

I know you're going through a scary time right now and are looking for some kind of good news, but this site isn't it. We have no way of knowing not only how good his chances are, but nobody here is qualified for that anyway.

Hang in there, keep updated from the doctor's, and hope he pulls through alright.

Slim to none, I'm afraid. At 79 he's never going to qualify for a liver transplant. And while the liver is one of those organs capable of regeneration, if it's 95 percent cancerous, then it's not going to recover. He will probably die of liver failure (jaundice) before the cancer gets him.

His doctor should have told him and his next of kin (your parents) this by now. Maybe they are keeping the information from you?

This is not good...the girl who cuts my hair (she is 6 years younger than me) has been Stage 4 with liver cancer for 5 years...but that is very unusual..the chemo is not curing her...just holding the cancer at bay...):

to be honest its not good. 4-10% of survivial when it spreads to other places. DONT give up! try everything you can. at this point there is nothing you can loose. I'm so sorry and I wish you well

His chances of survival really aren't that great. There's not much healthy liver left and because of his age, there's no way he'll be able to get a new liver off the transplant list.
