A dear (female) friend told me via email she was upset with her life and felt hopeless that she couldn't do anything to change it. She was a little emotional.

I replied saying I was sorry and sad to hear that and then did my impression of Third Eye Blind saying, "If you do not want to see me again, I would understand."

Then I signed off with a take care and xox. I never do the xox thing, I think it's girlie but I thought I would make an exception in this case.

I don't know. I'm not sure how I should have responded or if I could have responded better.

This doesn't have anything to do with being unhappy with you personally, and in fact I am sure she was asking for your help.

By just telling her goodbye, you were aggravating her depression!

Contact her and just listen to what she has to say without asking her for anything, and without talking about your personal relationship.

Right now she just needs a friend to listen. Don't' give advice unless she asks for it, specifically.

You should try to get ahold of her again and make sure she's alright. The things she said are a little concerning, and in cases can lead to something bad. Like I said get ahold of her and make sure she'll be ok.
