Did my employer stiff me?

I told my employer that my mom was ill and wasn't going to live much longer and they said that I would get 3 paid days off and that I could use my vacation time also if I needed more. I called in two of those thinking I was going to get paid but apparently that was only after she dies. That was my fault I guess. So I went back to work the day after she died and they set me straight on how the bereivement days worked and changed my schedule to give me the Friday Saturday and Sunday off since the funeral was on Saturday. Well it turns out they only paid me for Friday and Monday since I decided to use vacation time. So if I didn't decide to use my vacation day on Monday they were only planning on giving me one paid day off. I asked them about why it doesn't show anything for Saturday and Sunday and the hr lady says well you were already scheduled to be off those days so we can't pay you since it would give you more hours. WTF? Why did everyone tell me I get three days off that are paid? So next time a family member dies make sure you work those days before you tell them otherwise you won't get any paid time off? Honestly I don't really care about the money, it's the fact that they tell me I get paid and then they don't pay me. I talked to the hr manager and the asm and didn't get anywhere. I guess I'll talk to the store manager now or should I take it to a corporate level?

I don't know why she changed my schedule then. Really what she should have done is give me Friday Saturday and Sunday as bereavement and then I could have had Monday and Tuesday off like normal instead of altering the schedule and basically making it so I got no bereivment pay and still had to come to work anyways to make my money.

well, the bad news is, its legal, its not moral by any means, but no laws broken. and that's typical when you work retail, or service chains. the good news is, when the time comes to find a better job, they CANT by law say anything bad about you in a reference. they always insist on 2 weeks notice if you leave a job. if you walk out without notice, that means you can't get rehired at THAT job, ( since its retail, who cares if you don't come back.

I had the same thing happen to me, I bided my time, when I found a better job, I gave no notice, I went up to the manger, hand in my apron and clip on tie, and told em, I expect to see my last check in the mail by next wed. and walked out. (this happened at the serice desk, in front of customers, not in his office) so I left his standing there with a red face and a clip in tie, saying nothing. 2 shoppers clapped, rest just looked with puzzled expressions, but damn did it feel good.

You should discuss it with someone higher up in the company if you feel like you were misled. They can get in a lot of trouble for stiffing you on your wages, and they're like to just give it to you rather than risk legal issues.

These situations are specified in the collective agreement, you should have read it. Usually, when a family member dies, you get the three following days off (to make arrangements). If she died Thursday you get Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you don't work on Saturdays and Sundays, the only actual free day will be Friday. It's been just a misunderstanding, I don't think he mislead you in bad faith.

Look at your labor law,poster. Then apply for a fema leave of abscence if you need. They have to grant it

Take it as high as possible and make sure you point out that your availability was changed by them due to the situation.

You should have a written set of rules if you work for a major company. Verbal rules often don't work.

I looked in the handbook and it doesn't say anything about a 3 days paid for death of a family member that all the managers were telling me about before this all happened. Don't you think this sounds messed up or is it just me?

I am sorry for your loss. The days related to a death always Occur after a passing never before. If it doesn't state anything about days off due to a death and the managers are a bunch of babbling idiots, then you work for a unprofessional company.
