Why does it seem like spotters in the gym try to ego train people?

Being alone in a somewhat new town I have gone to the gym and noticed this a few times with random spotters.

I avoid spotters wen I do some exercises because I never seem to get the right one. I'll either get a spotter who does the reps for me or a spotter who tries to train me way beyond failure or my desired rep ranges which screws up the rest of my exercises. I get the whole "push yourself" stuff but I am not a fan of doing reps that throw me way outside my form and exerting energy into reps that cost me the rest of my workout. I am not a competitive lifter.

Anyone else deal with this? Luckily I am finding people in the gym here and there that are actually my style.
