One of my best friends used to live just outside of Phoenix, and there are large several reservoirs in the area where you can swim, boat, and water ski. His birthday is November 2nd, and I used to go out there around his birthday and take the boat out.

At the beginning of November, the water would be in the low 80s, and the high temperature would be around 90F, so it was perfect weather.

He's in Sacramento now, so we go to Lake Folsom, but not in November - though technically you could. It's still nice at the end of September though.

Yup. I've swum across rivers during spring snow melt in Vermont and New Hampshire. The water was probably 40F or 4.5C. Dangerous if you don't know what you're doing though. As soon as you hit the water your body will refuse to take a breath. You need to get yourself breathing fast or you can experience heart stoppage. And hypothermia can set in fast at those temps without a wetsuit or dry suit.

No external aids for us. We had to swim a river swollen with snow melt and return stripped down to boxers. We were young and dumb.

I don't know about lakes but sea temp here is around 13°C in November and I've seen plenty of people swimming.

    Personally I'd wait until July.

I don't know about the lakes, but the Mediterranean sea is warm enough to go swimming nearly all year round. Except maybe January and February, as the water cools down with less hours of sunshine.

You don't really get cold while swimming, you do when you get out of the water and dry yourself.

One of the few good things about living in a subtropical region is that you can go swimming at any time of the year. So yeah, I do swim in November and in December. 😌

The coldest temperature I swam in were 14* Celsius in some coldwater swimming pool. It wasn’t exactly delightful. 🥶🥶🥶

I've gone swimming in frozen lakes many times. I'm Scandinavian. Many of us go swimming in frozen lakes and rivers in the winter.

Depends where you are. In Australia, that's almost summer. In Southeast US, lake water is still tolerable in November.

Break out the dry suits or wet. Canadians tell me they dive with a farmer john wet suit over a full wet suit with gloves and hood of course.

We are more beach people than lake people in Australia.

If you like your ocean to be cold enough that you know you are alive but strong sun in which to dry off, Bay of Fires is arguably the most beautiful beach in the world. (Looking forward to a tor**** of abuse over that claim!!).

It is NOT patrolled by life savers though. Enter at your own caution. This is man/woman vs nature, not a place to teach your kids to paddle around.
