The Not so Merry Side of Christmas: The sad songs of Christmas

Christmas is a time of love, cheer, happiness, food, and presents. But not for everyone. There are many orphans, unemployed families, broken homes, and even destroyed relationships during the Holiday Season. While tunes like Joy to the World and Sleigh Ride fill the radio airwaves, There are also the sad songs of the season that make us feel blue. Here are just a few of some popular examples.

The Christmas Shoes-Newsong

Probably one of the saddest and most hated Christmas songs out there (even I detest it). The song is about a son who buys his mother a pair of shoes for her dying wish as she loses her battle with a disease.

If We Make It Through December-Merle Haggard

This song is about a Father who has been laid off from his job at a factory and his daughter cannot understand why the family cannot afford any gifts, food, decorations etc.. So they plan to stay alive through December and move on to a better place.

Blue Christmas-Elvis Presley

Ok maybe this song isn't all that sad,but to Elvis it is. The singer recently has broken up with his lover and Christmas will not be the same without her.

Pretty Paper-Roy Orbison/ Willie Nelson

This was Roy Orbison's only recorded Christmas Song. The song was originally preformed and written by Willie Nelson. The song talks about a homless vagrant at Christmastime who is ignored by busy downtown shoppers.

Do They Know It's Christmastime At All-Band Aid

By far the most worn out sad song of Christmas. During the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Apartheid, Poverty and focus on Africa in the mid 1980s the song featured many of the top international talents of the day. All with one goal to raise money for poverty.

Christmas isn't as jolly for some as the movies and TV might portray it to be, Even the cheesiest of Christmas Songs over exaggerates the true feeling of Christmas for many. For many years I've heard thesongs of it being the most woderful time where everyone is friendly, everyone is baking, decorating, rocking around the Christmas tree and so on. But the truth is Christmas is still a very lonely time for many. People in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes etc.. do not get visits from family. Suicide rates rise during the holidays. Unemployment can be a major struggle. There are children in homes who do not get presents because selfish parents spend all their money on booze, drugs, gambling, etc... Yes, you hear the Holly Jolly side of Christmas. But, still for many it's not so merry and bright
