It got me thinking. What about countries like America that have a lot of different languages? Should a Store Santa be able to converse in Spanish, Chinese, French, etc? After all you can't have Santa telling a 4 year old to speak English.

Santa Claus originates from a real person. Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century Greek Christian bishop from Myra (in modern-day Turkey) known for his generosity and defense of the faith, whose life and legendary acts of secret giving inspired the modern Santa Claus figure. He was a devout bishop who secretly helped the poor, famously saving a family from ruin by providing gold for dowries, leading to traditions of gift-giving on his feast day (December 6th).
While Saint Nicholas might have been, Mediterranean (olive skinned), there is no doubt he was Christian. However, Greek was his main language.
I think it's ridiculous to want a culture's tradition to change to accommodate people of other cultures or those who speak different languages.
Might as well say that every cultural tradition should accommodate everyone in the world.
Either learn the language of origin of the tradition or fuck off.
I don’t think so. Parents are already lying to their kids. So they can just weave a more complicated web of deception.
Those department store Santas earn a deplorable wage. It’s basically charity. There’s no reason to hold minimum wage costumers responsible for holding up parents’ promises of lies and tomfoolery. Especially when it would cost him more than he earns to be Santa and take him the rest of his lifetime to be fluent enough to fool a clever child.
It seems to me that the people who think that’s a good idea are probably the same ones who are happy with teachers providing skool supplies for the kids in their classes. Those parents should never have been allowed to have kids, let alone send them to public skools.
Santa speaks only the language of love. 🥰 Ok, that was cliche' and corny but if you noticed it was a quite effective way for me to entirely dodge the question completely while remaining neutral and non-committed should I later pursue a political career and this question gets brought up to be used against me 'cuz I answered one way or the other.

there's around 900 registered and documented Santas in the USA...
and thousands more with no papers, hmm... I wonder if some of them might be deported back to whichever pole they came from by Christ ICE
I'm completely finished with multiculturalism.
It's fucking frustrating and I'm saying that as one of the most mixed people out there.
You and me both.
I'm just gonna say it straight. Islamic foreigners, Indians, African Americans (some, like Somalians... must have something to do with their average IQ of 68...) seem to be the worst of the lot.
South Americans integrate just fine. Asians integrate and respect the culture and are usually quiet. But the ones I mentioned are ruining Western society. I'm not religious by any means, but I'm sick of the Islamic people especially trying to force their religion on others. North America and Europe are supposed to be primarily Christian continents. When foreigners come, they should be willing to adopt the culture of the place and integrate.
I blame the leaders and "woke clowns"/liberals for allowing the masses of these people in without screening properly. And don't get me started on giving handouts to illegal immigrants.
Right now, I feel like civil war should happen because countries are falling due to these liberal clowns.
No, Santa is an American.
@jJanSmit The American Santa does share some similarities with Sinterklaas, but they are not the same. Santa comes from the north pole Sinterklaas comes from Spain, Santa rides a slay, Sinterklaas goes on a steam boat, Sinterklaas is a bishop, Santa is mostly a secular figure Santa has elves, Sinterklaas has a dutch guy doing black face.
All cultures borrow from other cultures. Sinterklaas was based off St Nicolas who was a Byzantine bishop. Just because elements of a tradition come from somewhere else it doesn't mean it's not American or not dutch.
@emeraldsaphire There are similarities indeed, but I still think Santa Claus is a spin off from Sinterklaas. You're right about cultures borrowing things from other cultures.
English only thanks 🤭😋 that's why you're such a lovely Welsh lady @purplepoppy
There's nothing like English - 😋 ABC it's straightforward as counting 1 counting 2 counting 3
Anyways, who doesn't admire Mr C (Polar Express lol) 🎅
Maybe stores should hire Krampus instead. solves the language problem I would think.
Lol, that is just funny. Yes, problem solved. 🤣
Santa knows all languages so yes, he should speak multiple languages if possible and appropriate for the area such as Spanish where there are a lot of Spanish speaking families.
Only if they are in some country with several official languages.
Santa is a white American man. He only speaks English
Yes because one-fifth of Americans are Hispanic.
@purplepoppy You can't be serious?
Absolutely serious. The second a kid sits on his knee and gets told santa doesn't speak Spanish he wants to know what happened to all the letters he wrote. You've destroyed a child.
English only please
No, English is enough
