I hear so many reports of people who marry high status people and get abused or cheated on high status people who marry poor people and get divorced by a gold digger that wants half their wealth, or cheated on by people who never loved them, or dumped for a friend with a higher net worth then themselves or the wife becomes an alcoholic cause she has endless money and time and nothing to do.
I don't think it's completely irrelevant. In fact it's a factor that has a strong influence on human behavior. We are instinctively attracted to resources that make survival easier and we have created a world where money represents every necessary resource. That's why we find wealth so attractive. If we have an immense amount of wealth, then we basically have every resource we need to sustain our survivability. That's why do many people are greedy and it's why gold diggers exist.
But we also have an instinctive need for human connection. It's possible to prioritize this need. People from different status can form healthy and long relationships. Perhaps the biggest factor in this is human will. We have the ability to consciously choose which instinctive need is most important to us.

Status, irrelevant? Status is what permit us guys have a stable relationship.
Any poor idiot can have a one night stand, but to have a stable relation, you need to have status. Status: whatever you work in.
More or less.
