Is there any real value in premarital counseling?

I know a friend of a friend who refuses to do premarital counseling or even speak to her pastor before getting married. She's actually scared that she will be talked out of it... and just wants to plow straight ahead. I believe it would be helpful and won't hurt anything. To me, marriage is one of life's biggest decisions. Having objective, professional input is worth it.

Having never gone through it, it's hard to say. I can't imagine what they'd cover than any socially healthy adult wouldn't already be aware of.

My cousin does counseling and he told me one thing the couples work on is to find tools in how to resolve conflicts that will pop up in the marriage

I’ve never been through premarital counseling, but plan to. Everyone that I know, who has gone through it, has said that it’s good for being sure that you’re both on the same page. Marriage is full of obstacles, and there are different things that people can disagree on that often leads to divorce; finances, children, careers, family dynamics, etc. Premarital counseling helps you and your partner be certain that you are indeed ready to be married, and not trying to enter marriage blindly.
