What motivates attractive guys or girls to choose unattractive women or men?

I know two extremely good looking guys from my school days that liked unattractive women and one was in a long term relationship with a woman who was far less attractive than him. The first guy also married an unattractive woman when he was attractive enough to date somebody three times more beautiful than her. I remember on a previous social media site I used ten years ago, a mom said her son always had extremely pretty girls on his arm but the girl he married was very plain and ordinary looking but dressed like a nun.
