It's Prom Season

Whether we are looking forward to our upcoming prom, or looking back on our distant memories, we all have an experience to share. Unless you didn't attend prom, the image of the night is probably clear in your mind. The pictures, the extravagent outfits, the uncomfortable shoes. In this day and age, prom is about the big party, and maybe an even bigger event (in some peoples' minds) is the promposal (asking someone to prom). The stress that comes with the planning may seem ridiculous in September of your senior year of high school. However by the time April rolls around, plans for the limo, dress, table seating, date, etc. are flying around in your head!

The outfits that a girl and guy wear to prom usually consist of either a tuxedo or a formal gown. The guy usually has a black tux and if they want to match their date, maybe a different colored vest or cummberbund. The girl has a much wider selection of dresses. She could go for a strapless, one strap, spaghetti strap, mermaid, poofy, skin tight, short, long, etc etc etc dress! And forget about the colors...

The date debate...for some people this could be the most stressful of the prom planning. Should I go alone and hang out with my friends? Should I ask my crush? Am I going with my girlfriend or boyfriend? Will anyone even ask me?!?!?! The anxieties of students around this time of year heightens if they still don't know the plan for the date situation. In my personal experience, I was going to go with just my girlfriends (seemed like a pretty low-risk option). However when my best friend decided to ask a guy from her class, I realized, "Hey, I think I'll ask the guy I've liked for a year." I asked and he said yes. It's too bad I didn't realize he only saw me as a friend...so now we're only going as friends. This kind of emotional turmoil that comes from the prom planning is common, so if something along these lines happens to you, just know that it's you and a lot of other people. Just a tip, if you want to ask someone (whether you are a girl or a guy,) just DO IT! They might say no. They might say yes. Either way there is no shame in asking!

It's Prom Season

The way prom works is a mystery to me. Pictures are taken, corsages and boutonierres are exchanged. Limos are ridden in and then comes the actual party. Hours of dancing and socializing and then comes the afterparty (aka the thing parents fear). The afterparty may be sponsored by your school or you may choose to attend a fellow graduate's party at someone's house. Maybe you'd rather head home to hang out with your friends. Whichever you choose, just know that although you are graduating and are a legal adult, your actions will follow you. If you choose to drink, you better stay off the road. If you choose to have sex, you better use protection. That means condoms and hopefully birth control.

Prom is a time to celebrate your accomplishments and achievements with the people who have been through the same things with you for most of your educational career. Enjoy every minute and try to stay in the moment. Take pictures so you can remember the smiles and the laughs.

That being said, I truly hope that everyone has a happy and SAFE prom night. I wish you all the best!
