Boyfriend bought me chocolate for my birthday?

So, on my birthday my boyfriend (of about 9 months) bought me chocolates, along with taking me out for dinner and dessert. I enjoyed it, afterwards we spent some time together on the beach and I acknowledge he did spend a fair amount of money on me... but I can't help but feel a little hurt. I went to the effort to buy him something he would really like for his birthday, along with taking him to dinner and the movies.

I feel like a box of chocolates was very last minute. I know he's bad with gifts, he often doesn't buy anything for his brothers birthdays. A He sometimes will spoil me with flowers and chocolates, which I love! But I have never gotten a gift from him which I can keep, which makes me a little sad. How should I handle this? I don't want to seem ungrateful, cause I appreciate him and what he does. Am I expecting too much? Should I hint that I would love to have a piece of jewelry to think of him with? Please help! Thank you!

If he's young and poor, try hinting at a small gift first. Maybe not something from Tiffany's, but perhaps a $100 necklace that catches your eye somewhere in the mall. You should say how cute the necklace is or something to the like, but also mention that maybe you think it's sad that a girl buys herself jewelry *HINT HINT*.

Unless your bf is a numbskull, he should get the idea. But do it near a time when a present is appropriate, like Christmas.

bleh chocolate as a bf gift is too common... it'd make more sense to give 5 cans of beer to a girl XD

Do you know how many girls would have liked that? For my b-day, my mother had to even argue and remind my then bf (now long time ex bf who was going to come to my house empty handed and just say b-day and that's all) to be romantic and to take me out at least once a week, etc. It was a really bad argument they had, in which he actually cried I truly feel it was a forced b-day and not coming from himself.

9 months isn't that long though, anything more than that and it's sort of a bigger commitment. Give it until next year and hint then, chocolates and dinner was appropriate.
