5K opinions shared on Other topic. Well models have a career based 95-98% based on their looks. Even without photoshop their faces are better and bodies are skinnier than the majority of the girls on the planet. That's why they are chosen to be models. Sure they are photoshoped to enhance the effect but even if they weren't, their non-photoshoped pictures would still make people insecure and that's the point, they want you to be insecure. They want you to feel inadequate so you'll buy the product. They realized that if you use attractive people, we'll be more likely to buy the magaziness, products, movies and that if they enhance the models/celebrities beauty through the use of photoshop or makeup we'll be even MORE likely to buy the products.
Also I hope you don't think its just women, it affects men. I'll be honest, I feel like shit too when I see the pics of the 6,2 guy with a 6pack, chiseled jawline, perfectly symetric face and well styled hair. I'll admit that it probably affects women a lot more but its not like it doesn't affect men at all.
Anyways the way I see it is its just the way the client wants it to look. It's kind of an artform. I'm not saying that models are artists but the photographers, clothing designers and photoshopers that all work together to create the final product are. Sure it's often sexually charged and used to peddle products but they are using the original picture and molding it into their vision. It's supposed to be a fantasy. Other artforms like drawing/painting often do the same thing. They often leave out things like cellulight, or they might enchance or decrease certain parts of their subject. They don't depict the subject EXACTLY as it is but rather how the artist sees them in his/her head. Instead of paint or graphite, it's made with pixels.
I think like others have suggested, it would be better to convince people to play less attention to the advertising rather than convince the media to stop what they are doing, because thats probably not happening15 Reply- +1 y
Unfortunately things are rarely ideal. The real ideal world in my opinion would be if we were all born really good looking kf if we could control the way we look. People would probably feel better about themselves and personality would carry a lot more weight. People would be more on an even playing field.
I know I technically dont have to look like a model but I'd really like to :( - +1 y
I have thought of it too but look when all people were bern the same beautiful then actually the word "beautiful" wouldn't exist. I understand that you would like to look liie a model, but trust me other things count most. Personally I have considered people really beautiful even though for the most they were under average :)
- +1 y
I disagree, beauty is to a certain extent objectively measurable. It has to do with symetry and proportions. If everyone was symetric with well propositioned faces it's not that nobody would be beautiful, it's just that nobody would be above or below average. So we'd be on an even playing field.
I realize that I don't have to look like a model to get a girlfiend but I still wish I looked like one. I'd just have a better overall image of myself :/

+1 yHonestly, I'm in the minority here. I don't see why A) Some celebs are actually making a fuss about this, and B) Us normal folks don't have the awareness to realize stuff like that happen.
For the first one, celebs are literally where they're at because of their looks. Sure, they have other talents as well. But there are tons of talented people out there who don't make the cut because they're not the total package. So they're in a position they got with their looks... but then complain about looks and marketers using their looks for whatever purpose. These celebs can pick and choose what jobs they want, and STILL be very well off. So I have no sympathy for people like Keira Knightely and her boob issues.
For the second, we know it happens. Celebs know it happens. The editors know it happens. But every time it happens, we seem to forget about it? Or we lose our touch with reality and get lost in unrealistic images? That's nobodies fault but your own (not YOU, but you get what I mean). Despite what people think, the world can't make you hate yourself. People always like to toss the blame elsewhere. And even though the world can give you plenty of motivators to do so, how you view yourself is entirely up to you.
So on top of who would even enforce such a ban, and also on top of knowing how well (not) people jumping to the "ban it" option actually works, it's not up to other people to make you feel a certain way- that's your job. If you can't even do that, you're weak spirited and blaming someone else definitely isn't going to help your problem.
Excuse any errors, this was typed on my tablet.02 Reply- +1 y
But once again, what you wish reality was and what it actually is are two different things. The world doesn't conform to what YOU think should be the case. Others have their own motives and reasons for things, so it sounds silly to say "I ban you from doing that because I don't like it". It's the very same argument people present for some kind of "fat tax" to persuade people from eating so much fast food. Instead of taking responsibility for yourself, they have decided that someone else must now take responsibility for helping them make good choices.
Same here. YOU need to chase your own self-comfort and the image you want, and have the strength and awareness to recognize when these models and celebs are shopped.

+1 yHonestly, as much as I completely detest them showing us all these photoshopped images of people, I don't think they should be forced not to.
Yes, I understand that a lot of people become insecure because of it. As much as that sucks, I don't think it's a good enough reason to stop. I think it'd be healthier for us all to not derive our self esteem on how those magazine chicks look. Also, the media is a business. It makes money out of our insecurities.
"Loose weight now with this diet pill!"
"Get shinier, straight and sexy hair"
"This bra magically gives you 2 cup sizes bigger without surgery!!"
Their whole scheme is to feed on your insecurities so you can buy their products. So you can aspire to look like those models, when even those models don't look like that.
Is it sick? Yes. But there are lots of other sick legal businesses as well. That's the price we pay for freedom.
I'm not really a fan of most prohibition cuz it just feels like a cheap cop out sometimes instead of dealing with the problem. (Sometimes, obviously if it directly hurts someone, like child abuse, I am against that type of prohibition, before I get a smartass comment).00 Reply

Girls need to accept themselves as they are and bring confidence with them. That is something men notice and love; when a woman is self assured in herself and her relationships it is super attractive to men.
Women and girls know the photoshop deal, too. We need to stop striving for a perception of perfection and strive instead to be perfect within our own bodies.12 Reply

2.9K opinions shared on Other topic. Why only girls? Men get photoshopped too, you know...
anyway. I don't want to vote either A or B. I'm a future graphic designer, my work pretty much depends on photoshop and programs like it. I think photoshop is fine as long as it's not overdone. You can use it to fix lighting/contrasts and colors too, things that are really important when it comes to publishing high quality photographs, whether they're from a red carpet event, meant for an ad, a portrait, or something more "artsy". Also, I don't mind people photoshopping blemishes, dark circles, wrinkles etc, for instance. That's stuff that makeup could cover up anyway. My problem with photoshop is basically when 90% of the model in said photo is changed; he/she is made more slim/muscular, given better hair, given bigger eyes/lips, among other things. That's over the top and unnecessary.14 Reply- +1 y
I think maybe because the asker is a woman so it came up naturally. From her question, she was talking about the part where photoshop in media has influence to the society, especially girls, to define beauty and how it makes them feel. Some girls would go overboard to look like photoshopped celebrities.
- +1 y
@areyouladygo photoshop affects everyone though, so I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of only focusing on girls is since guys go through the exact same thing.
I would like to see those industries take a LOT more ethical responsibility in how they photoshop and airbrush, yeah. That's probably me living in an idealist world, though.
Perhaps every image that's been altered past a certain point should have a notation of some sort. Kinda like an asterisk or something. I don't know.113 Reply- +1 y
or, why not have them list all the ways it has been photoshoped? Like how you see the content labels on food?
I imagine they'd need pretty damn large billboards to fit all the text ^^ - +1 y
@dartmaul15 I like that idea!

@DodgersGM so do I!!
If anyone wonder exactly what you can do with photoshop alone, take a look at this: https://i.imgur.com/p4fPSsA.gif - +1 y
@dartmaul15 that gif! I'll never look at pizza the same! LOL
@ Asker: Yeah there'd be asterisks all over the place. It would be an imperfect solution, but I'd much prefer it to disallowing the practices altogether; that would feel like a legislative overreach to me. - +1 y
@dodgersGM and i can't think of women without getting hungry *facepalm*

@dartmaul15 you and me both, buddy. You and me both...

On an only semi-related note, since you're a baseball guy, I heard an interesting idea yesterday for Cooperstown. You let in the Roses and Clemenses and Bondses of the worldses... excuse me, world... BUT their plaque has an asterisk of sorts on it, detailing their indiscretions. I can't see it actually happening, and players being all that enthused about a BALCO reference on their plaque, but I thought it was a funny idea you might get a laugh out of.
- +1 y
@dodgersGM now i can't look at one without wanting pizza...
I wonder if we can do the same with beer? - +1 y
Haha yeah those curmudgeonly old farts that control the HOF voting are so ridiculous.
Personally I feel like they should all be voted in, save for Rose (I'll explain why I'm him). These writers are basically trying to retroactively instill rules and punitive measures for violating those rules, and it's all so dumb. And I mean, I HATE Barry Bonds. LOL
Rose, I think he should be in, but at least his exclusion is defensible. He violated rules that were in PLACE at the time he violated them, and those rules had clear punishments in place should they be violated. It's like, sorry, it sucks and it'd be nice if you could get in, but you knew the possibility this could happen. - +1 y

But Barry is so likeable! Such a swell guy! Clemens too. True story, that fucker turned me and other little kids down for autographs, AT FENWAY, DURING WARMUPS. Not like he's out with he's wife at dinner, he's on the job. And get this, he didn't just say no. He said "25 bucks." You're going to charge a 10 year old fr your autograph? I mean, sign it or don't, but don't insult me. Hated him ever since. But I agree, these old purists are ridiculous. And a big story in Boston was that Asuka Brown chick basically saying she wouldn't vote for John Farrell as manager of the year in 2013, or any other manager from a team in LA, NY, Chicago, Philly... the big market teams... because of their payroll. WHAT? This chick is like 5 years from HOF voting. This is who we're counting on. So many agendas and stupid personal criteria. They'll still find a way to fellate Joe Maddon with the Cubs, I'm sure, haha.

+1 yPhotoshop does more harm than good in most cases because fact is it creates far more unhappiness than happiness due to the unrealistic expectations it gives to not only females but males as well.
Voted A.21 Reply
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI voted A. But I imagine if EVERY SINGLE thing should not be photoshopped, it would be somehow weird too. I think the media should show more of the non photoshopped things (more than they already have now) to educate girls that in real life, celebrities and models are also flawed like normal human being. And I think not just the girls, but also men. Some girls want model/celebrities perfect body to impress their delusional men that watch too much p*rn thinking that normal girls look like that. Yes I know some people do have naturally perfect body, don't have cellulite and all that, but they're not the average population.

Just because many do, doesn't mean that the world suddenly needs to change for them. Especially when what they do isn't the most efficient way of living life to begin with, in regards to self-esteem. People need to learn that self-confidence and esteem doesn't come easy, but that doesn't mean it's the wrong path to be on.
Banning something you don't like is lazy, irresponsible, and entitlement to an automatic "feel good" culture. You need to answer for yourself, instead of expecting others to do it for you.
I voted A, but I'm not sure honestly. There has been Image Production in this manner long before photoshop! I mean I think its sure a harmful thing but I think its a symptom of a much deeper problem. I think Euro-America has some harmful ideas about attractiveness, and what makes someone attractive, and that needs to be deconstructed!

Well I have thought of it, and many of my friends who are actually girgeous feel insecure abiut their body because they think celebritied have a much better one. Also I remember this time with Keira Knightley, they had enlargen her boobs , she was against it but it shows that media wants to promote an "ideal" body type..
+1 yIt doesn't really bother me if they photoshop people (within reason). I feel like if I were a celebrity and I had a huge pimple on the day that I had a photo shoot, I would be sad if they wouldn't photo shop it off. I don't think they should change the shape of their bodies though. Just smooth out skin.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yThe knowledge of photoshop and other photo misdirecting skills is so prevalent in today's world... What use is it to show pictures without editing? If you don't know that it is fake, you have a lot more problems than insecurity. Every single picture that is put out in the mainstream has had some sort of editing to make the subject look better, that goes from people, to food, to animals etc...
