I hit a bird today with my car. Am I a horrible person?

I was coming form Wally World and these two birds were just hanging around in the middle of the street. I tried to slow down but it just wasn't working out that way. One of them moved the other one got caught underneath. I peeped in my mirror and I saw him struggling to get up =(
I felt bad but not that bad to the point where I wanted to stop my car and get out to help him but I did feel bad. Now each time I've seen a bird today I get squeemish.
Am I a horrible person now? I cried all the way home.

nah birds literally dive infront of cars I don't know what the fuck is up with birds but I think they take it as an occupational hazard

like they MUST know the road is fucking dangerous like they aren't stupid right they've avoided predators for thousands of years. A badger or fox wandering onto the road at night is different. Birds can FLY. Like they're doing this on purpose. Like if I see something a million times bigger than me coming at me full speed and I have WINGS I'm gonna fly away they are doing this on purpose

Absolutely. Fun fact - a part of evolution we could actually see in progress was bird flying in to cars. When trains and later cars had just appeared birds would fly into them and die all of the time. Those that died obviously didn't pass on their genes so only those who were a tad bit smarter had offspring.

What you did was a service to nature - that dumb peabrane wasn't meant to live any way if it was stupid enough to not get off the road.

@LauraMarx Cars and most of other Human inventions are outside of the animal experience. A speeding car on the highway is just something the animal can not anticipate nor understand - it's an alien concept. So I do actually think that they need to evolve alongside Human inventions for several generation until they get a general understanding on how to best survive.
