Why are some people so territorial over seats or tables in places?

Growing up I noticed the same people always had their own seats in church, resturaunts, the auction, etc. They would get kinda upset if someone else sat in their seat even though there was no actual rule that they owned that specific seat or table.

Animals have territorial instincts and as we know humans are animals. So it's not that weird, but I suppose some people have more territorial instincts than others.

Also familiarity as Ericalovescats have said. People feel more comfortable with what they know. That's why many little kids want to see the same movie over and over again even if there are many new movies. When we grow up we need less that familiarity, but some people still want it in an overexaggerated way.

Because the popular kids or adults don't want me to sit near them, so i only have so many options

Familiarity I guess. People at church always did that because they knew they wouldn't be in back of someone taller than them
