You wouldn't think it to look at me, but I've been poor. Not "how will I make rent?" poor, but "what parts of a squirrel are edible?" poor. And I have a seething, visceral hatred of grass. Why? Because it's inedible. It's a plant grown specifically to have no purpose. Some of our animals can eat it, true, but most of us don't feed it to them.
We take a plant from another continent, export it, displacing the local plant life, and grow it here. But we don't get enough rain, so we have to bring in more- I can only imagine what people who don't have clean water to drink would think of us if they knew- and we have to fertilize it, as well, to make it grow. Then, when it starts growing, we cut it down, and pay someone to haul it away. The entire point of growing it is conspicuous consumption- saying "I'm so rich that I don't need to use my good land to grow crops". I'm not a Communist, but I'm no fan of the damaging excesses of Capitalism, either- poverty, even American poverty, will do that to you.
Meanwhile, you have dandelions. Many lawn-people HATE them, because they're actually colorful and, unfortunately for them, completely edible. You can eat every part of that plant. They don't all taste good, and they have nowhere near the vitamins you'd need to live on them alone, but enough to keep you going for a while- and to supplement other foods you actually have. And they're all but invincible. The lawn-people break out chemicals that they'd sue the pants off any corporation that even came close to exposing them to, and the dandelions just laugh. You know what does reliably kill dandelions? Shade. Let the grass grow, and it'll kill the flowers. The dandelion is ultimately a symbol of the final superiority of nature- the very measures you take defeat it are what guarantees it'll win.
Snow, on the other hand? That's just snow. I have no problems with it.
I never lived anyplace where it snowed. So I've never had to shovel. I don't think I'd like it.
It was my job to mow the lawn when I was a kid. I had to use the edger, too. And then sweep the sidewalks. I guess there are worse jobs.
Where I live now, we don't have any lawn or any place FOR a lawn. Every summer, once the rain is done and the wild grass that grew during the spring dries out, I have a LOT of weed trimming to do. It's mostly on hills. I fucking hate it. Over the past few years, we pay people to come out and help.
The thing is, once every thing is trimmed, it stays that way the rest of the year. It's a once a year thing. But did I say there's LOTS of it to do? Fuck!
After that, the only thing that needs upkeep is regular garden weeding.
Trade you lolol
But with a trimmers? And once a year? Versus cutting the grass from sitting too fall and shovel in winter? Lol
I don’t cut grass. I had a classmate in elementary school accidentally end up under a mower and it did awful things to his legs. I’ve had an irrational fear ever since.
.
It snows like a mother bitch here where I live so shoveling sucks balls. I’m so thankful my husband does all the mowing and has a snowblower.
.
The year he had hip surgery was the worst winter for snow we’d had years before or since. Worst shoveling of my life.
Aww man, yeah I can understand that, and good your hubby does it 👍
Well I live in the South so we don't have to shovel snow down here: just mow the grass, lol. Trust me, the rare times it does snow, it's not enough to require a shovel.
But honestly mowing doesn't bother me too much: I like the smell of fresh cut grass, and how nice my yard looks when it's done :)
Told you mine looks like a drunk person cut it😂 should touch it up but eh,
I mean it would be nice if your yard was evenly cut so your neighbors don't think you were drunk when you cut it, LOL
Why lol that would be funny😂😂

I live in an apartment building currently so I don't have own grass to cut but occasionally cut it for my father with health issues making it too painful for him. I don't like it. At all. Sweating in hot (often moist here too) air pushing some old, gas powered, heavy and noisy af thing around while trying to dodge/ignore the sharp verbal strikes from his wife surrounded by mosquitos... yeah... At least you know you're alive.
Thank God I life so north summer is shortest season of the year.
That being said and like I also said I life in an apartment building, shoveling snow is one my favorite things of winter. Firstly: It's a good physical exercise. Secondly: there's mostly elderly people living here and the ones whose job it is to do it arrives next morning so I also get to help the ones who can't use pathways around building to various locations of interest without someone first removing the snow and throwing sand on the ice below. I've even kept one stairway clear from ice using own salt, I'm that serious about snow shoveling. Well, it was for my own use as you have to go those stairs if you want to get on road from bicycle storage, and I'm also every weather bicycle driver as it's matter of clothing no matter how cold it is.
Cover the face and wind resistant gear on top of warm clothes gets you through most freezing temperatures on bicycly but there's limited amount clothes and face to peel off when confronted with moist heat from 24h sunlight on northern swamp that is this country while pushing some ratchet machine while constantly interrupted only to get nagged about unnecessary things...
I hear yah that heat while doing manual labor can be a b*tch
Cutting grass. it's expensive. brush hog, mower, weedeater, fuel, time...
snow is easy. 100 dollar initial investment for 100 lb propane vertical. strap it to some hand trucks. 60 dollars for a torch from lowes. flame thrower vs snow = no competition. why shovel it when you can melt it.
I even use the torch where I don't want grass to grow because if steepness or its a ditch or driveway, etc...
don't want to build a proper fire? propane flamethrower lights it every time, first time.
Yeah my luck I'd burn my house down lololol
You can half-ass cutting the lawn or just choose not to cut it at all. But for snow, it's almost mandatory, unless the snow melts within a day or two. I hate shoveling snow a lot more, and it usually takes twice as long. It only takes about 20-40 minutes to cut the lawn (back when I used to live in a house in the US), but it takes at least 45 minutes to an hour to shovel the driveway and sidewalk enough to make it walkable. Not to mention, it could just snow again a day or two later and you gotta do it all over again.
As for me I just looked at one of my old photos & the last time it snowed here was three years ago & three years ago was the last time I shoveled. As for mowing the lawn I mowed it this morning & in a week I’ll have to mowed it again. Based on the times I have to shovel vs the times I have to mow I say I dislike mowing.
See that's what I'm saying, I mean we get snow every year but not the whole winter but yeah that grass keep growing
Let's see here.
Mowing: warm weather, can drink alcohol, only have to worry about random dog turds.
Snow shoveling: Fuckin freezing, slipping hazards, wet/heavy, have to clear every key spot and make sure mailbox is accessible, salt shoveled areas, have to shovel end of driveway every time the fucking snow plow goes by.
Give me the lawn mower, a Summer Shandy, a radio for music or a baseball game any day.
Random dog turds🤣
That's tough 😬 ... I'll go... Cutting the grass because with a snow shovel you may hurt your back but you don't have to change oil, Gas... deal with an extension cord, weatherize the mower every year... Change the spark plugs... Adjust or change the blades... So much more maintenance with cutting the grass than a simple snow shovel
Agree!!
Cutting grass sucks big time and it's always a hassle here where we live cause the Landlord made it our responsibility to keep up with the grass and this seems to always be an issue and my cousin still hasn't said anything about it and yes the grass needs cut all I can do is pray I am not able to cut grass cause I have poor balance and capable of falling so I am a fall risk, I went to visit my Moms grave and almost fell down and I was swaying all over the place to keep my balance
Sorry to hear that
@Brainsbeforebeauty Appreciate your kindness
💛😊
I'm sorry but I don't like either of them, those chores suck 😠
I don't like em either, but sometimes gotta do it and add I'm the only one here, yay lucky me🙄
I'll send my daughter over she loves doing both chores 😂
One is 2 cold & cutting grass I have to be careful & watch for wasps bees, etc highly allergic ☹️
So my daughter is very helpful 👍
I have two daughters, but they don't really come help me do sure I'll borrow yours lolol
No prob I'll pack her bags 😆
Lolol
Cutting the grass when I was younger my parents had an electrical lawnmower.. imagine cutting the grass.. with 10 extension cords.. and when one comes out you have to stop and go find it, also where I live it snows 6 months of the year and I have seen some ridiculous snow falls... but still grass worse
Yeah I think cutting grass worse... Specially as I was like that grass meme other day😂
I'd say both but we don't get much here. But when we do, people act like they're going to be trapped inside for weeks and raid anything and everything in the stores that isn't bolted down. But at least I wouldn't be attacked by a swarm of angry, constipated wasps when shoveling snow, so there's that. :P
Right! I've been seeing some mutant looking bees, the one was really fat looking I actually jumped up and ran in house lol
We've got to be careful here. One wrong move and they're all over you. And then, it's war. I hosed them down with wasp spray. But they're a nuisance here.
The snow is not so bad when it's the fluffy snow but it's a different story when its the wet snow that's good for makingx snowballs. That stuff gets heavy after awhile. Sometimes you have to do it more than once a day because you know how much worse it will be if you wait for it to snow to shovel all of it.
Yeah that's the way I have to shovel cuz of my back and shoulder
@Brainsbeforebeauty
That sucks. What happen to your back and shoulders?
Had artificial disk replacement in 2005 and have a bum shoulder that's given me issues since 2018, been told different things so🤷🏼♀️
It's not even close. I'm Canadian. I hate snow. And I mean hate. I've shoveled enough goddam snow to blanket all of North America 10 feet high. You never get used to it.
I love mowing the lawn. Sunshine, warmth, birds singing... steak on the barbecue when you're done. No comparison.
Now I want a steak lolol
I'd cook you one.
Yay yum lol
Living in Michigan, I had to spend more time cutting grass, but at least I could make a schedule on when and how to do it, where shoveling snow, I was at the mercy of mother nature. The areas I lived in, you got fined for neglecting both duties by the city, so it was something that had to be done.
Here in Arizona, the only grass I see is artificial turf, and only really tacky people would be caught using that in their yards. I've seen maybe five or six snowflakes in the past 12 years I've been out here in the West, at least up close. From a distance, I can see the mountains getting buried in snow, but the snow only lasts for a few hours before it melts away even up there. In Flagstaff, I hear they have to shovel every once in a while, but definitely not out here in Tucson. Phoenix, no one cares about that dump, so I guess it doesn't really matter if it snows there or not. Not much grass cutting, but plenty of grass smoking out that way, I hear.
I don't mind doing either. It's coming into winter here but it's unlikely to snow since I'm 1) living at sea level and 2) too close to the tropic of capricorn in South Africa.
I miss snow
Well anytime you miss snow, you can come shovel mine😊🤣
Well no don't do that wouldn't want you to flip out of it
Sorry to hear that💛💛
By winter I might just be in one myself, we could wheelchair race up and down my driveway, loser plows 😂
Ah so you can shovel then😂👍 lol I always fear winding up in a chair if my back were to go out again
Better put snow tires on it, 4 wheel drive wheel chair snow plow. Hey we should design one, might get rich off the idea😂
😂😂 live your positive outlook on what must be very hard for you👍👍 true strength there 💛
"love not live🙄
I figure I'm 49. I'm not getting any younger. My son is 2. I can decide to get bent out of shape mentally over something I can't change, or I can shrug & say "is that all you got" to the devil.
Last year I "died" of Covid-19. My heart stopped and the medics spent 4 hours doing CPR to revive me. Losing my leg was small stuff after that. I'd have been killed by sepsis if they hadn't amputated it so it was a no-brainer.
I learned from my dog. He had cancer in his back leg so the vet amputated it. He came round from the operation and saw it was gone. It fazed him for a couple of hours, then he was more bothered about the cone on his head 🤣🤣
The physical adjustment is tough, learning to control the chair (need to redecorate now) but I'm retraining as a Life Coach.
Lemonade anyone?
Life coach, that's awesome
Shoveling the snow. I hate cold, wet pants and everytime I shovel.. I experience cold... wet pants. I absolutely hate that feeling. At least once you cut grass it's over and done with for however long. In Canada, if you shovel the snow.. in 30 mins your lawn is covered again. Ugh, so tedious.
I unfortunately don’t know what it’s like shovelling snow so my answer should be grass but 80% of my place is concreted and the rest is covered in garden white pebbles.
So you luck out on both counts lol
Lolol
To be Honest I like doing both
Winter time I throw all the snow from my driveway on to my. Lawn , for the extra water
Yes both of those are my me time lol
Well of you need more me time you can come do mine😊 lolol
Sure you can come vacuum too 🤣
I live on 2 acres of land and need to use a push mower, we also have a very long driveway that goes back into the woods. I hate doing both! (Thank God we bought a snowblower last year)
That's good! I still don't have one
We went to lowes and got a credit card, to help purchase it.
We don't have so much snow round here and both the gardens I'm likely to mow have sit on mowers. All the roads round here are salted and plowed by tractors so hopefully I wouldn't get stuck in.
👍👍
I've done both, Colorado and Florida. I enjoy both, I like shovelling snow better, it's colder and quiet
And it's just the sidewalks and driveway. Cutting the grass you gotta do the whole yard, front and back
I like the smell of cut grass, my little brother has a business in it, because of the tranquility of it.
