I don't spend much money in general. Covid has kept me from going out even more, and caused me to work more as well because it's an easy way to spend time and make more cash.
I pay nothing for electricity, so I have my heater running whenever I like. I live on my boat, and my rent is about 1/4 of what most people pay to live in my area, and that's not counting the people with beachfront/oceanside access like I've got. I pay 20% or less than they do!
I own 4 vehicles including my boat, 2 motorcycles, and a truck. My yearly registration fees are about $1,200 and insurance for the year is about the same for all of them. I drive my motorcycles almost every time, use the truck just when it's raining, or so foggy that I'm getting wet. Oh and also for grocery runs and to fill my two 5 gallon drinking water bottles. Fuel consumption on my motorcycles is 40mpg or better.
I eat at work, and am often at work 16 hours a day, so they feed me all day and I don't actually need to get groceries that often. I go to the bargain store (Grocery Outlet) a lot and grab heaps of protein bars and energy drinks when they have them (I had probably 30 boxes of 12+ bars each at one point.), and I get my fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses at Trader Joe's.
Another thing I do is buy a gallon of milk every month and I make milk kefir with it, which lasts up to two months. It's basically a homemade yogurt drink that I mix with protein powder for a breakfast shake. My total food costs for the month are about $80 for groceries and about $50 for eating out (I eat out between 3-6 times/month, and spend between $8-$35 depending where I go).
Total spending per month is about $1,000, add another $200 for vehicle expenses as listed above, and that's about it. I occasionally splurge on a high priced item throughout the year. This year I got a new dive watch, a drone, an iPad, and a MacBook Air. Last year I got a new motorcycle, a rowing scull, and dive equipment. These items usually total around $5,000, but sometimes a bit more or less.
In summation, I save a LOT on rent. I don't go out much, and I keep my luxury items practical.
I had to increase my hourly rate. I haven't had an increase in 3 years so it was time
I have no idea how to handle that stuff… 😠…
I can’t stand the cold … I need my home warm and cozy…. But the oil price is expensive… I don’t know what that means.. how expensive?
$10k a yr? But what if I’m cold and the house is only 69 degrees…
my sister talks about some hot burner insert will heat up the whole house…
then my honey said it will dry up the house so we bought 2 humidifiers… otherwise my lips get all dried up..
it’s way too complicated for me…
I just want to come home to a warm house.
gas Price is high… but I have to drive to work.
What else? Eating out? Hummm yeah we do that too
I think I can cancel Netflix … I don’t ever use it… how much saving is that?
$13. a month… not saving much for me…
see my friend told me I am terrible with money… but I know how to make money… at lease 😝
I had an energy audit three years ago and replaced all my lightbulbs with LEDs. Even the outdoor floodlights and the lights in my garage. and shed. I got programmable thermostats as well. I also had my insulation upgraded. I got $ 3000 of added insulation for about $300. I could tell it worked because it was harder to close my door because of the vacuum. They sealed a lot of leaks and added insulation. They did a great job and I am sure it saves me money every single year. The other thing I did was get a zero percent loan for a new high efficiency oil burner. I paid $80/month for 7 years but I saved so much money during that 7 years it was like I got the burner for free.
We're earring out less, trying to consolidate driving, and no extra purchases (like lawn furniture or roto tillers) 😉
lol never gonna let that drop now. Love it.
@dustybiker 😂
*eating out less
I just hope it doesn't get as bad as 2008.
We lost everything in 2008.
danm, really sorry for that. It was a tough time. Times are tough now too.

I don't need to worry about stuff like that
Currently, nothing at all has changed for us, but if I had my way I'd cancel all the streaming services we have. I don't watch TV anyway so I dont care if we have them. You can get more than enough things to watch on YouTube, twitch and other free things or just go outside and be active. I think between all of them we could save $125-150 a month.
I do not pay for any streaming services. I have basic cable. I looked into switching to something else but I checked a couple of alternatives and after all the fees and taxes it ends up costing about the same. I was thinking of just getting an over the air antenna and cancel cable completely. Then I would not have to deal with all the junk phone calls. I could just go to the library if I wanted to use the internet.
My wife and I both work from home and internet is a pretty important thing for us so that would have to stay. We don't have a landline at all anymore either.
For me though, watching TV is too passive. I need to be engaged and participating in a way. I was the same way growing up though. I didn't watch cartoon and typical kids shows growing up, I was fascinated with game shows because I could actually play along.
I have a vacation home and I do not have cable. I got an antenna and get about 20 channels. Just the networks and a few others. I sit on the bench outside the library with my laptop to check e-mail and use the internet. I do not need a landline up there. My kids complain but I tell them that they could stay home and watch tV.
I never needed the AC this summer, for the first time. It was never above 80F in the house, so no $600+ electric bills. Last year we put the heater on first time Nov 24th. This last ten days I’ve had the windows open. Forecast doesn’t look cold either. Gas prices are over $5.10, but passible on motorcycle if light handed. Sucks this week as my fav bike is in the shop so using my truck more, but I’m saving regardless.
More than just the risen prices this year, but a double blow.
OMG! My dad used to say “are we having fun yet?” On our boring ass family vacations.
😞😞😞😞😞
I had to sign up a program to save money on my electric bill. ❄️
Oof! That’s a lot going on. Thank goodness you’re paying less now.
Turn down the thermostat. I didn't run my ac at all this summer. I only used ceiling fans. For winter I have my thermostat set at 65 unless I'm going tobe gone all day, then I bump it down to 60. I managed to get away with a $30-$35 electric bill for the summer months. Don't know what they'll be running now that it's winter.
Name a year when they didn't?
You are aware there was a pandemic and global cool down, as well as other international situations earlier in the year, right?
You were really dumb enough to think there would be no overt knock on effects eventually?
I had to cut back on how much guns and ammo I buy. In 2020 I was able to spend over $5,000 on that stuff, but this year I only spent a couple hundred dollars on it. :'(
At the end of the year I am going to cancel YouTube TV since it costs $65 per month. I also only eat out twice per month now instead of twice per week.
I dont eat out. I sometimes order Uber eats but not all the time. And my dad turned down my thermostat when he came to visit. I also got a whole quarter raise at work! 😂😂😂 $10.25 an hour baby! 😂 And after getting Christmas gifts for friends and family on Amazon, I haven't even gotten groceries yet 😅 waiting ti I get paid first. I'll get some money for Christmas too from grandparents so I think I'll survive.
Inflation sucks. Let's Go Brandon
I survived the Carter years with double digit inflation (I think it hit 15%). Now I'm too old to worry about it. I have more than enough to see me through to the end. Good luck to the rest of you!
I have a couple, maybe four years for this to affect me! I should cancel my gym membership.
And Netflix my mum uses my Netflix more than I do!
I like to cook, yet some days it has been easier to order takeaway, I am able to get into cooking more often!
I do not drink, so no robbing the liqour store!
I do not gamble!
And I only use the heating when it is really cold, for my dog, or drying washing!
It'll be fun! 😬
I'm one of the lucky ones that don't have any big payments Everything I own is paid for in full. Still I eat out less then I used to & avoid the coffee shops.
well... I am Mexican as well, and this happens every single year, nothing new
What? 🤯🤯🤯😵💫😵💫😵💫
@FictionalCharacter what? lol
I thought you were black or white
@FictionalCharacter really, what about me made you think I am black?
this deserves a DM chat... lol
I am wealthy cuz of the stock market so money is better than ever :)
I'm going to have a big garden next year, this year it was just tomato's. That is if I'm actually living home and not doing the roaming life style again.
I can tell you I am a excellent grower of weeds, now if we can only eat those.
To save money we cancelled cable tv and just use Netflix and free tv channels now. I also cancelled my paid music membership on Amazon but I still have access to free prime songs. And I cancelled a cooking forum I was paying to join.
I did butched hogs, chickens, turkeys and rabbits for food
I canceled Hulu and Patreon. For Netflix I’m using my uncle’s account
I went to college years ago so I’d have the earning power to withstand periodic economic inevitabilities like this😝
Prices have gone up? I never noticed.
