As for "much bigger/taller", not likely. Even males who are up against much bigger opponents don't fare well. There is a lot to be said for proper training, so it also depends on the degree of training, tactics, who the opponent is and a lot of factors. It's not an easy question. Some big guys are still in shape, others you could tire out by making them hop around for 60 seconds, then finish them easily.
The moves in the video are mostly ineffective "fight choreography", especially things like the ending double-punch where the puncher sticks their face exactly where the opponent's hands are.
As a martial artist (who has practiced kung fu), I don't see kung fu as an exceptionally effective art. I think it is beautiful and has great benefits, much on the same level as capoeira (which I have also practiced), but it doesn't have a lot of take down efficacy.Movie kung fu/martial arts looks great, but it's really more like dancing than turning yourself into a dangerous human weapon. I'm totally not hating on martial arts, I LOVE it, and neither am I hating on kung fu or women (love those as well :). I think the benefits of most martial arts are more about personal health than ass-kicking ability. My advice to anyone (male or female), who wants to have an edge in a confrontation, is to buy and carry a $9 pepper spray dispenser. Practice with it a little, so you are confident in the operation. It will be more effective than studying martial arts for 3 years. I recommend that over a firearm because owning a firearm statistically increases your likelihood of death or injury by firearm.

I'm going to assume you used "kung fu" as a place marker for martial arts in general. Let's change that question to a better more likely scenario! Can a woman hold off a larger physically stronger male using martial arts long enough to escape a bad situation? That answer is yes she can. Just as another has mentioned I also have a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well as many hours of training in Hapkido. I have been trained to maintain mental discipline and NEVER go on offense! Only use enough force to cause an attacker to leave you alone. I once heard the story of a lady using Hapkido who destroyed a man's knee in a Walmart parking lot about 2 AM one morning. Sadly I have been forced to take out a man's knee. I also have been forced to hold another man in a joint lock until the cops could get there. It causes me shame that I was forced to use my training and was not able to talk the other person down. A female in this situation will do everything she can to avoid using her training. In fact, if given a chance she will run away. People watch these movies and get the wrong idea when it comes to self-defense using martial arts. So please let's not use the term "defeat"! I rather use the words exit a bad situation!

Solid perspective from a practitioner. Avoiding violence is the best outcome. Maybe there is something about all the time spent grappling and executing violent maneuvers in a practice environment that allows us to have already had our fill of that type of excitement, and to defuse conflicts rather than escalate.
I think a lot of people who don't know how to fight get really excited about fighting, and therefore engage in it more.
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yi know men are much more bigger and strong then woman and woman was made for man to have sex with, as woman are weaker.
well, i personaly am super submissive and will follow all order that males give me.. i will let them spank my ass and boob till they red and fuck me till i am weak if i do something that they dont want.
woman are weaker and can't defeat man.11 Reply
its all about technique.
just because she knows kung fu doesn't mean she won't choke when the time comes to use it. i know a guy into martial arts, the time came to literally use it to defend hm self and choked and got hurt based off running his mouth10 Reply

+1 yIt could be possible but there have been actual times where this has been put to the test and one instance Lucia Ritjker who is regarded as the best female fighter of all time. She was undefeated in boxing 64 fights and also competed and was a 3 time muy Thai champion. Knocked out most of her opponents and even registered punching power that was higher than the male boxer she was tested against. No doubt knockout power. When she went up against an amature kick boxer who had avg skill and technique she was knocked out. Despite having better technique and comparable punching power the Male when backed into a corner used aggression as well as speed and power and was able to knock her out visciously and end the fight. Men have 10 times more testosterone than women and spike with more adrenaline when under stress. The agression and fight response is almost an unfair advantage for the male vs a women. Do I know women who could be up a guy sure but if he has any technique at all his bone density and mass as much as 50 percent more and more lean muscle testosterone and adrenaline that men have at their disposal closes the gap and places them at an unfair advantage when it comes to a fight

First of all, regardless of what some may say, size DOES matter, but it is not the only thing that matters. Technique, speed, timing and an understanding of biomechanics can supersede a weight or reach advantage. The element of surprise is also critical along with the ability to use field expedient weapons.
Let us suppose, for example, the man intends to rape the woman, a typical scenario that would cause a desperate struggle. An overconfident man may not think he needs a weapon. A shrewd woman may appear to cooperate out of timidity or fear and wait until her attacker is vulnerable to deliver a devastating blow and follow with a strike that is potentially lethal. Maybe she elbows him in the mouth and as his head snaps back she chops him open hand across the throat. If she hit his trachea with some force she can retreat to a safe distance and watch him choke to death in less than three minutes.
What if he grabs her from behind and before he can gets a good grip she leans forward and snaps her head back, bashing him in the nose. Even if he recovers enough to chase her, he is already bleeding and in pain. Maybe she is not only a martial artist but an avid long distance runner. Ten blocks later he is gasping for breath from all the cigarettes he has smoked and she is just warming up. As he rounds a corner, she clips him with an arm’s length piece of half-inch iron pipe she spotted on the ground. Perhaps she drops a concrete block on him as he crosses under a bridge. Remember, this is war and all is fair.
The most dangerous weapon anyone possesses is their mind. A woman can be just as smart as a man and smarter. Size and testosterone are advantages but they are not invincible.
~JSmith20 Reply1.9K opinions shared on Other topic. A smart fighter can defeat anybody. You have to be really good, though. Good enough to not get knocked out before you can outsmart them, for starters. And you have to be fast, real fast. I've trained with all kinds of different martial arts instructors in the past. The scariest one was my teacher's old Kung Fu teacher. He was about 65 years old in the early 90's and 140 pounds. He was a former real Shaolin monk. The guy was so fast that nobody could block any of his punches and rarely his kicks. If he wanted to hit you anywhere, he's going to hit you and there's not a thing you could do about it. You can't hit him because he will block everything. The guy was faster than Bruce Lee. He was so fast that it gave his punches extreme power. The best comparison is "would you rather get hit by a 20,000 pound truck going 25 miles an hour, or get hit by a 3000 pound Ferrari going 200 miles an hour?" The only way to beat him would have been fight him in like a phone booth where he didn't have room to get away and then tackle him and choke him. He would probably gouge your eyes out in the process, though. A woman doesn't have to be as strong as man to beat him, she just has to be a smarter faster fighter.

+1 yIf the woman gives the guy the okay to go all out, then it'd all fall on how skilled she is at martial arts and if they doesn't know martial arts or some form of fighting (boxing, wrestling, tai kwon do, krav maga, etc.). The reason why I say this is because from a biological perspective, the average woman is not in the same playing field as the average man. Now am I saying that women are weaker than men? No, as average means what would be classified as normal or a quantifiable degree of a variable. Back on topic, the reason why I bring up biology is that the average man has more upper body mass compared to that of the average woman

Now, to repeat, an average is what would classified as normal over a group, just like being over or under weight describes someone being to far from the upper and lower averages. For some examples that show the physical differences between guys and gals, here's a video from YouTubeAnd these are just some examples, as not every pair up of guys and gals will be the same, for lack of better phrase, "power level (s)"

+1 yUsually striking only gets you so far in real-world fights. Grappling skill tends to be even more dominant than the MMA there and partially because there's usually an element of surprise and unreadiness to it. I say that the hard way from experience as a trained kickboxer who found most of what I learned useless in street fights and frequently losing to submission holds like chokeholds, given the lack of emphasis on grappling in kickboxing. From what I can tell, Kung Fu seems similar.
So I'd still bet on the taller and bigger guy here unless the girl is really trained in grappling and he's not trained at all.25 Reply
Asker+1 yThere are techniques and moves to escape a choke hold though
- +1 y
If she has a good arsenal of tools from Kung Fu to get out of them, maybe more of a chance there. I still lean on the taller and bigger although I want to be proven wrong because that would be so interesting to see!
- +1 y
One thing is that it's very easy to underestimate the strength of a taller and bigger man, and I'm not just saying that to women but to men as well. I've fought some 6+ feet and over 200lbs and it's like fighting a tank that charges into you before you're actually ready.
And I'm no pushover. If I may post some vanity pics:
...
...
...![Can a woman who knows kung fu defeat a much bigger/taller guy?]()
![Can a woman who knows kung fu defeat a much bigger/taller guy?]()
... I'm pretty strong for my short height (173cm) and heavy for it (80kg) and trained to some degree in martial arts. But I stood no chance against those huge guys. I'm not sure against such grip and upper body strength that any technique can get us out of submission when the opponent is so, so, so much stronger than us.
So I have my doubts about the idea that technique is so superior to strength that it suffices to beat people multiple weight classes above us.
Asker+1 yWow that's you? Impressive
I think the element of surprise plays a big role. Most men underestimate women, so they may not expect a reaction from her, so she could catch him by surprise. At least that's what I'm counting on 🤔- +1 y
Yes, although pre-COVID! I've gained a couple of kilos that I need to lose. Surprise seems to be the ultimate thing as far as I can tell. I think a successful strategy for big guys though is to wear them out first. Dance around them. Keep them at a distance. Big bodies take a lot of energy to move and usually tire out more quickly.
+1 yIn terms of practical martial arts, I wouldn't bet on her being able to take out a man using only Kung Fu. It's not a martial art with good street application. I'm a semi-professional Mixed Martial Artist with a background in Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and European Martial Arts. I have practiced alongside women in several of these styles.
Based on technique alone, women were able to submit larger male opponents who were lower belt levels in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This is due to knowing the proper technique and being quick. Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are very technical martial arts and not solely dependent on your size. However, in the upper belt levels, the men were able to easily outmaneuver the smaller females by using technique and weight. The same goes for smaller males though.00 Reply2.1K opinions shared on Other topic. As someone who practices this art, people like the guy above are bringing it into even further disrepute, as well as endangering those who think they can now defend themselves.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/47dn0P31BBw
They're struggling to make that work against a compliant choreographed assistant. Try it when sparring and see what happens.
Any self defence needs to be dynamic, instinctual, and based on a few principles which are repeated over and over against resistant opponents, preferably when sparring. A large dose of hard conditioning and fitness helps a lot.
This guy is a much better representative of kung fu (I do like the tree stuff).01 Reply- +1 y
As for your specific question, there's too many variables. Some women are naturally powerful athletes and well built. With the correct and realistic training, along with some hard conditioning, I think they can quite easily take down bigger males. Most men have at least 20kg on me (I'm tall and skinny with a low body fat). I think I'd be able to smack someone quickly before they even had a chance. As a general rule though, extreme scepticism and caution is advised.

+1 y'Contextual insightfulness', precise strike placement and your Opponent's egotistical hubris and sense of timing ALL contribute to the 'real world' outcome. Even Bruce Lee never won EVERY combat.
Just TWO well-placed fingers deftly placed at the laryngeal declivity, can create such pain as to incapacitate the largest muscled adversary, giving a hundred pound female motivated by her adrenaline a venue to escape.
Before my life experiences as a soldier then later a municipal police officer, I used to teach women's self defense at PSU in the early 70's.
I taught a mix of Judo and Akkido techniques... physics, momentum and anatomical vulnerabilities are the critical concepts when physical size and prowess are involved.01 Reply If the guy can't fight, then anyone who's a better fighter can beat him.
The lesson? Learn how to fight, regardless of who you are.
To answer the question, yes. If the guy isn't very big (under six feet tall and under 200 lbs), or if the guy doesn't have allies to help him overpower the chick, or if the guy is unarmed AND can't fight, either.
I'm sure @JosyJosy has a lot to say about this one. I love her and all, but she believes any woman who knows martial arts can take out any man who has less experience, no matter what.00 Reply693 opinions shared on Other topic. When you go into a fight you always go to finish it in the shortest possible time, If she is skilled in her art and has surprise on her side then it would be a 'Yes', she would want to incapacitate and leave before the man recovers,
But if the man is alert and is skilled then that would be a 'No', irrespective of the art, especially in one such as boxing were boxers train themselves to accept punishment as part of a fight, he would also likely have the advantage on reach, strength and endurance.00 Reply
+1 yIt depends on her skill level and whether he has any training himself. Equally matched, a man will win the majority of the time, but if she can use her body better than him she can more than even those odds.
Alternatively, screw the rules and go for the nutsack01 Reply- +1 y
And man can go for the Vulva.
Oh, no wonder you were suspended.
It depends, women are in general much physically weaker then men. So if you want to hit a man in self-defense, hit him on a sensitive spot, hit him hard, and run. Here running is most important because if he manages to catch up or is prepared to fight, it will be much harder to critically stun him.
00 Reply546 opinions shared on Other topic. With great strength advantage and even a small amount of skill, they will totally dominate someone that is much weaker relying on just skill, even if they are a black belt.
I once had a martial arts instructor that thought skill was all that mattered and I proved him wrong back when I was a white belt and he was a black belt instructor.
Skill only wins when there is only a slight difference in power.00 Reply301 opinions shared on Other topic. With kung fu against a boxer? No.
Boxing is a way better self defense tool than kung fu, which is more a performative art than a self-defense tool.
Wanna know one thing you only need a simple class to defeat anyone any size?

+1 yI guess if she got him off guard and he was untrained but on average, men are physically superior to women in every way. If the woman was liek top in her league against the average man I'd consider the odds more in her favor but even then, guys are strong as fuck compared to women.

I don't think it is that easy. Anyone who knows a little fighting can easily take that woman down, man. Also, remember what I said, the street is brutal. Fist fights can end at any moment with a knife, and at any moment someone can shoot you in the head with a gun or smash your face with brass knuckles. Technique alone is not enough
If she is trained to fight AND if she is a outstanding athlete, she can defeat most larger men. However, unless she can get in a first disabling blow, she would have no chance if the guy is also a top athlete such as college basketball player regardless if he was trained to fight. The difference is size and strength would be impossible to overcome.
