What do you choose to do?
Do you think you could land a plane if someone walked you through it?
What do you choose to do?
Yes, as long as the plane wasn't broken and/or the weather wasn't especially challenging, or the plane being so low on fuel that I only had one chance, etc. I've "flown" simulators for many years, and I had one flying lesson (my friends bought me one for my birthday 25ish years ago), and though I didn't land, I did fly and maneuver the plane well enough to impress the instructor.
I'm imagining a simple, stick/yoke and rudder plane here, like a Cessna 172 or a Piper Cub. If you're talking about a modern jet passenger liner, it would be even easier under good conditions, because, though you have to enter a number of settings, the auto-pilot can do all of the hard work to land you. That isn't necessarily the case in bad weather, but in an emergency situation, you could be directed to a different airport with more favorable conditions, presumably.
Having said that, I'd still prefer an experienced pilot, because if something unexpected were to happen, I simply wouldn't have the necessary experience to deal with it, and could very easily crash. Look at the "miracle on the Hudson" - a veteran pilot on a very routine flight in a modern aircraft in good conditions - everything should have been perfect - except a flight of geese flew in front of the plane shortly after takeoff and bird strikes killed both engines at very low altitude and airspeed. Had the pilot not made the ONLY correct decision - AGAINST his natural instincts (and against what other pilots thought was right, and were proven to be wrong) - that could have been a disaster, and yet, everyone lived and only a few minor injuries. You just can't replace a skilled, experienced pilot when things go wrong.
Great opinion.
Here's a great video about modern commercial jets:

I have no direct experience, but I'm pretty cool-headed in a crisis, I have a (theoretical, at least) understanding of most of the instruments, and I've run through a LOT of flight simulators, plus I'm in contact with air traffic control (a HUGE help, that). It probably depends somewhat on the plane- a modern airliner, MAYBE; an ME-163, probably not- and of course on conditions at the landing site, but I reckon on at least even odds I could get us out without killing everybody. Possibly with some property damage and/or injuries, but alive.
Knowing MY luck, however, it'll happen when I'm flying off to start my first day of pilot school. Since I got my CDL, and can drive anything that can legally go on the road, I've tossed around the idea of getting a pilot's license, too, so I can just say "What kind of vehi- ah, screw it; I can drive them ALL!". Possibly then I'll cackle maniacally; I haven't decided yet. Unfortunately, learning to fly is pricey as all get-out.
Nice opinion. 😎 Yes it is pricey. I really want to check out my local schools myself though.
I would remain on auto pilot for an hour while traffic control was teaching me to read all the instruments and to operate the various controls. Then I would practice for a few minutes until I was confident that I could control landing the plane. However, on a commercial airline that would never happen because there would be amateur pilots that would be landing the plane.
Smart!
I have my private pilots license so I most certainly could.
Awesome! I’m thinking about getting one.

Anyone can land a plane - but surviving it isn't guaranteed :)
I love my (quite realistic, as aviators say) flight simulator - and get down regularly with only minor damages. So I guess I know the basic idea.
Reality is different of course.
But large passenger aircraft have a lot of automated systems - guided by ground control, we all have a chance. Small aircraft... it will be quite a bumpy ride, but without cattle on the ground I'll perhaps only break the propeller and one tyre
(but I know how to change tyres :D )
Add a strong crosswind, though - and I'll rather opt for the parachute.
Good opinion. : )
While I have never flown a plane, I did help build an experimental plane so I got used to lot of the controls and instruments, so I know where the throttles are, I can read altimeters, and compass headings. Considering the alternative, I would certainly try to keep my wits, make clear explanations to ground control that I'm a total novice, repeat all messages, and act like a robot, doing just what I am told to do, as far as changing frequencies, lowering flaps, etc.
A man recently made an emergency landing in Florida after the actual pilot had some sort of a medical emergency. And with auto-pilots and audible warnings on airliners, that would be a big help.
Interesting to know that there is NO MINIMUM AGE to learn to fly a plane (flying with a licensed instructor), 16 years old to fly solo, and 17 to be a private pilot. You have to be 18 to work towards a commercial license.
Great reply. Thanks for this.
I was listening to audio recordings of emergency landings on one of the radio sites. I was on the edge of my seat with some of them. One was an unconscious pilot and passenger in a small plane. He did really well, the controller was so calm and praising him. I was leaking tears in the end from their emotion.
If I'm sitting in an airplane right now and something has happened to the pilot believe you me I want to be the one that they talk through it I can run any type of equipment I can drive any car I can drive any kind of bike anything that has wheels and a motor I can understand the Power Band I understand the slide I understand the speed I understand the force I understand how to turn it even on skis it's like riding a bike a dirt bike you have to use your weight you have to to turn but I would want to be that person that had to land it that's for sure I wouldn't want anybody else to do it because I know that I and very capable I'm doing it if talk through it I would make two passes the first one would be almost touchdown the second time I would do it
For sure. I used to tKe a flight simulator class and even though it was only the 8th grade, because of the way he did the class, I logged a lot of hours.
I feel like I kinda remember most of the important stuff and I'm pretty sure I know what the impact would be like and stuff too.
Also the teachers part time job was being a flight instructor, after I left he actually got a full time commercial job.
You’re so lucky to have had that. Love those kinds of experiences.
Yea, there's something really empowering about having someone who's really good at what they do teach you something. definitely greatful for it.
Very true.
I am sure I could do that... other people have done it before with no aviation experience
so I am sure I could do it with the assistance of an expert, I'm good at following instructions and completing tasks under pressure... lol
I know that I would be a whole lot more worried and wary if I had to land a helicopter
Yes, you need all four limbs and good weather conditions.
and six eyes...
@NathanDavis I’m going to learn how and see how accurate that is. 👀👀👀
should take about 60 hours...
If I only nap thats like four days… with rests to cool the engines.
What an ass. 🤣
I bet the rush was the best, though... haha
🤣 Yes. I felt it.
Erm, maybe, if nobody else is confident they could then I'd try. I'm pretty cool headed under extreme pressure, and I think someone loosing it under pressure would be the biggest problem.
Yes, flailing and screaming might distract.
I used to fly my grandfather's Cessna, so I think I'd have a reasonable chance, yes.
Assuming it's a jet, it's obviously going to be a bit different, but having that experience would certainly be helpful.
What a wonderful experience.😎
I had a doberman pup flown in on one of those in a rescue transfer effort. The pilot was showing me the plane like it was his baby. It’s a bit like an rv with wings.
Ha, yeah; people thst own them tend to treat them like family. A lot of people feel nervous flying in such a small plane, but I loved when he'd let me take the controls. I wasn't even old enough to drive, yet. 😁
Is it easy to handle? I liked it. It looked sturdy all around.
It's really not as bad as you would think, so long as you keep calm and steady.
Jerky movements, or freaking out can get bad pretty quickly, but overall it's pretty easy with a little practice.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m looking forward to my own chance one day.
Maybe
I've never flown a plane I've never even driven a car however that said if I could get an understanding of how the plane flies compared to the controls then my chances of landing safely are greatly increased I say this because I'm good with my hands and have very sensitive touch also I'm able to steady my hands really really well (also I play a lot of video games so my hand eye coordination isn't that bad)
Yes. Of course that walking through it will take a while and I would light simulations after the lessons first. I follow a rule that goes 'Every landing you survive is a good landing'. This would be no different.
True words.
A single or twin-engine private aircraft? Yes.
A commercial jet (of any size) size? Not a chance.
Whichever your imagination prefers. Luckily commercial jets have more than one pilot.
Yes todays planes are mostly automated so they can land themselves. at least the size I am likely to be onboard on.
Smart man. Picking the proper planes in the first place. lol
Yeah I could, would not want to but can read instruments, set instruments, automatic systems, can work radios and navigation kit and flight systems kit.
I know I could get it down, you have gravity to help with that, now landing safely, would be more like pure dumb luck.
Truth.
Yes, I could. I have a knack for operating vehicles
Good knack to have!
Well I would try my best.
I believe I could land a plane if needed. As a hobby, I've "flown" simulated planes on my computer. I understand the basics of flying, the instruments and controls.
A 747, no I doubt anyone could. Spent enough time in bush planes I could pull that off though
Those luck fun. 😎
*look
That's all fine but why this plane has steering wheel 😆
It’s old. Not sure what model. It was in the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom.
I've played so many video games... and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
😉
You might be screwed.
Oh awesome. That is a burning desire of mine at the moment. Do you plan to continue elsewhere?
What is your fav plane?
Lol I don't know there are a lot of things going on with planes. I’d sure give it a try if it was the only option though
I definitely have faith in you. 😎
The plane is going to land no doubt about it. No matter what I choose.
Hope for the best.
