Someone gave you money for doing nothing, and you're saying that's "too little?" Good thing I don't tip. This is exactly why.

I never went out to eat in restaurants BECAUSE of this obligated bullsh*t. I'd rather not eat at all than be forced to give someone money in the 55 minutes it took for them to bring it from point A to point B.
This is like saying I did the very bare minimum and you have the option to reward me for it; why didn't you reward me a lot of money for doing something a trained chimpanzee could quite literally do and get paid in bananas for?
Downvote me all you want, but obligated tipping is F*CKING RETARDED. And this "minimum percentage" crap is entitlement you'd think only the elites would have, not someone with no actual job skills. But yeah, blame me because your employer is f*cking you over, and don't do anything to him. I don't tip my doctor or lawyer; why TF should I give you $50 extra for bringing food to my table and not spitting in it?01 Reply- +1 y
Oh yeah, and I'd also be the Dine and Dash (or realistically, not finish and just leave) type if the food or service was horrible.
I already said I didn't eat out at restaurants either, but I was with friends who did, and had to stick up for them when the service and food was horrible, because they were too polite to just leave on their own, let alone not pay and tip.

+1 yIf you sat there for longer than 15 minutes the absolute minimum you should be tipping is 4-5 dollars.
When you take a seat, especially at a busy place, the server is looking at "how many tables to I have?" and "if the average table stays for 45 minutes, and the average check is between $80-$150 and I have 5 hours left, how do I make the most money?"
When some dick head takes a table for 8 just to have $30 in beer with an old friend for 3 hours, it's incredibly rude, low class and unsustainable to leave a bad tip (provided the place is busy enough that you're cutting back on their profit. If it's noon and there's a bunch of tables open you're fine)00 Reply

+1 yPar for the course would be 10%. So 2.90 would be fine. Make it $3 to be sure.
However, I never tip anywhere. The owner should pay a decent amount for the job. It should not need tips to make a decent income. When someone tips me for doing my work, I might change my mind.00 Reply
+1 yIma tell ya.. in my country its so rare to give a tip for waiter or waitress. For real 😂

To me the amount of meal doesn't matter tbh... and whatever amount u give as tip is extra thats not what they are there for... they get paid for what they do... so for being nice and letting the waiter/waitress know that you are happy with him/her u can give any small or big amount it can be even bigger than your meal's amount depending on how generous you are or how much u can afford to tip... and its all fine n nice if u dont tip at all or tip just 1 dollar after having some expensive meal cuz again that is not insult

+1 yIn the US that's too small. 10% should be an absolute minimum and even that is pretty low.
Personally I don't go by percentage so much as how much work they did. Taking an order and bringing a plate of food that cost $30 isn't any more work than one that costs $10. For me, generally I give a higher percentage for lower priced meals than higher priced.03 Reply- +1 y

You have to realize that is how they make their money. In the US, jobs that pay tips are not required to pay minimum wage. They make their money from tips, not from salary. If they didn't get tips they would be working almost for free.
Yes, it is usually voluntary, but if you don't tip it means you expect them to work for almost free. In other places where tips are not expected, you are still paying them. It's just included in the price. - +1 y
That is not my issue. The real issue is people getting mad at those who don't want to waste their money on stupid BS, in a pointless and retarded system, allowing said system to continue, instead of getting mad at the restaurant owners for not paying their staff properly. "They're not required to pay minimum wage?" Why isn't everyone pissed off at THAT, but at me for not wanting to give some super-low skill job worker $20 extra because of a broken system.
As I said though, I just NEVER went out to restaurants in the US because I'd rather literally never go than be forced to give someone "thirty percent" or some bullsh*t for bring food from the kitchen to the table while doing the bare minimum to not be a rude jerk about it. Most wait staff are not nice or cordial people, whatsoever. They hate their jobs, and rightfully so, but I'm not going to reward them an excess amount of money for that.
Over here in Korea, I dine out every week. And most places are actually *cheaper* than the US, if not the same price.
Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yPretty sure 15% is the going rate and in the States waiting staff are dependent on tips for their standard wages, it is not a bonus, it is performance related pay, so payment is not optional, if they have provided reasonable service and you have not tipped them then you have effectively stolen from them, it is literally no different than picking something up off a shelf and walking out without paying for it.

+1 yIf you’re eating AT the restaurant and being waited on, I like to give 20% for a tip. 15% is really the lowest you should go. A proper tip here would be about $5.80.
00 Reply 1.4K opinions shared on Other topic. In my country wages are better and tips are included so you can tip nothing or 2 bucks if you feel like it :) I feel like it's a good system.
00 ReplyRestaurants are lucky people still come in with the price hikes. Wait staff is definitely going to get hit on tips.
00 Reply"Tips" are supposed to be for extra effort, tipping for the sake of it is misleading and shouldn't be a thing.

+1 yIt all depends on the service & the quality of the food.
00 Reply 1.7K opinions shared on Other topic. Deary, anything over the cost of the meal is a tip. Even if it's one cent.
00 ReplyThat's too little. You really ought to be tipping closer to $5 for a $29 meal.
00 Reply12.8K opinions shared on Other topic. too little. if the service was good I would give 4-5 bucks.

00 Reply 749 opinions shared on Other topic. Too little. 2.90 would be considered the minimum respectable amount

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yIt's enough if the service was terrible. If the service was good then that amount is woefully inadequate.
00 Reply1.3K opinions shared on Other topic. 10% is a small amount of and 10% would be about $3. I wouldn't tip 10% unless there service was bad
