Do Americans see Scotland as a third world / deprived country?

because I have some American internet friends and I even met some Americans, where I live

they are always for one extremely surprised that me a mixed race, biracial girl has a strong scottish well spoken accent, they expect me to sound like an urban African American, they are surprised i don’t smoke cannabis, and they are VERY shocked that we have the same stores like Costco, H&M, five guys, Taco Bell, they are shocked we have a lot of well known fashion brands here and that we listen to Rap & r&b at the night clubs, and how there’s similar fashion trends here too.

Why does it shock them so much? Do they think Scotland is like out in the middle of nowhere with nothing

Because all we are exposed to from Irish culture is the country side, dirt roads, super pale white Irish people with strong accents. America tends to curate visual of other countries being improvised as compared to ours to sell the " American dream" we have continued to shove down the rest of the worlds throats. We are the best as our government likes to promote and we will gaslight other citizens and naive foreigners to prove it.

Okay yes this is accurate! It’s just tiring meeting americans and they are wow every 15 minuets because we have something that they also have or we have something better. I guess it’s like if I where to think about new zeland or Australia a few years ago I would’ve been surprised they had similar brands and establishments to the UK / US. It’s just shocking when they have visited the UK before but still are shocked by it I guess living in America, like you said and hearing about those countries seldom, and when they do it’s not exactly shown accuracy they wouldn’t know better

No most Americans don't think Scotland is a third world country. But unfortunately your public education system is terrible. There are a lot of really stupid Americans and they get sensitive about it.

In American if want to be educated or have any sense of global awareness you have exercise individual initiative to self educate. But most Americans are pretty lazy... good news is that top 10% of Americans are bonified bad asses.

No I know what Scotland is and infact I think your accents are way to strong i don't even know what y'all are saying. Plus I would never expect someone from the Scotland area. To have any sort of American accent at all. I know a few Scottish people online.

Scotland tends to promote its countryside more than it's cities. People tend to think of the lochs and Highlands rather than the urban areas. When you do see towns on tv and film they tend to focus on crime, poverty and alcoholism rather than the nicer side.
Scotland also plays the victim card as this oppressed nation under the thumb of the evil English and perhaps that appeals to Americans.

I'm really offended of late, by how (some) Scottish people speak. When I hear the accent, it's so rough sounding. I'm guessing it's the Glaswegian one? It's like the worst thing I've ever heard.

I don’t think so. I think places like Scotland or England or other European countries are similar to USA. Countries in Africa or Asia or South America I feel like would be a lot different because of the culture being different. For the record I’m saying different. Not bad or worse, just different.
