That sort of repetitive behavior suggests OCD diagnosis and busy hands being one of the release mechanisms. You should never smoke because it would be the repetitive cigarette holding rather than nicotine addiction

You do it because they are there and it gives you something to do. try keeping them covered
could be a nervous tick, or habit. get yourself an egg of silly putty or a fidget something when your nerves kick in to distract you from doing that

There is a psychological precursor for this. It might seem a bit extreme to say you need therapy however with a bit of research you'll see why
I do that too. It’s a bad habit
