Can something happen if you give your SSN over the phone?

I never give out my credit pr debit card information but stupidly gave out my SSN (social) over the phone yesterday.

It was about receiving information about autos and motorcycles. The information needed was my social. I thought it was weird but ok gave it out.

I believe I made a mistake. Can something happened?

I have a difficult and unusual password in regard to my account so it's unlikely they will figure it out but I'm still concerned.

Sounds like phishing. People who give out information like that is the reason why we keep getting these damn calls. If they make enough calls, eventually someone will give out personal information.

Never ever give out your number except to a few places like employers or known legitimate financial institutions.

I'd double check the security of ALL your financial accounts.

If anyone claiming to be your bank or credit card company calls and wants information, don't give it to them. Call them back using the number shown on your bill or statement. Even if caller ID shows the same number that's on the bill or statement, don't give out any info. Call them back and dial the number yourself (don't use a call-back feature).

Steal your identity. Put freeze on your credit report.

I am telling you as landlord who runs credit and criminal. you should disregard anyone who says you are not at risk as they obviously have no life experience. With your social security number, they can wreck your life. Contacting the bank is way after the fact. First hing you do is freeze your credit report to prevent charges and the like. then you contact bank and cards and let then know there is a freeze.
This freeze will likely affect any electronic bill payment etc... It is a long ass process and checking your credit about every 3 months.

You gave out your SSN. That would be worse then giving them your credit card number. I think you got screwed over.

They can take your identity. A lot of places verify your identity with the last four numbers, never asking for the whole thing.

No, not as long as you gave it to your bank. But you should never be asked to give them your entire SSN number.

They can steal your identity. Take out a credit card in your name.

yeah that was so stupid of me giving it out to some woman I don't know. The lady sounded so young and sweet when going through the offer, I got carried away. Stupid me.
I reported it to the fraud hotline and they're taking care of the matter.
